    Is this cheating??

    Ive been given permission by my landlord to dig over part of my back garden to create a mini allotment (actually he doesn't really care as long as when/if i move out i restore the grass), ive started to dig up the turf today after waiting for the snow to go and realised how flippen hard it is, sooooo would it be cheating to pay for someone to do it for me or should i stop moaning and get on with it !!!!

    Would you not appreciate the end results more if you do all the hardwork yourself?

      No, I appreciate it more when I see all the hard work my OH has done when it comes to digging

          sorry, can't agree with the 'do it yourselfers' - get someone in, I do - he's called Snowdrop and I'm just cooking his tea

          I do, however, do all the real gardening, seed sowing, plant planning, plant planting, pruning, etc etc etc

            It is pretty hard work. I did over my lawn in sections, only digging for about 20 mins at a time before I retired to a bath & red wine

              Ive decided to do it myself but a row at a time, should be easier to handle that way!!

                im all for paying someone to do it, if you can afford it, there will be plenty of work for you to do after. also you are providing someone else with a chance to earn money.

                  I dug over my 4 raised beds myself (well with a little help from OH) but when it came to the rest weeding, levelling and a pond dig I brought someone in, but that was in July not January!

                  I suggest sitting quietly for a few weeks with some catalogues, then do a bit at a time in line with the sowing season (Oh and put some black plastic / carpet down to kill what you can now).

                  Have fun and no hernias (the NHS is overstretched as it is).

                    It all depends, blue 411 - why do you want to turn the plot over to veggies in the first place? If it is just for the veg and you want to get it sorted asap - then get someone else in to help. If it is for fresh air, exercise and the great feeling when you know you have achieved something - well that only comes after the digging!
                    Believe me - I have done both!

                      I'm all for paying someone to do it if you can afford to, they will more than likely get it done ten times quicker that you which means you can get down to the exciting bits of sowing, planting etc even quicker.

                      I have learned the hard way that i am no good at digging & always end up with a trip to the osteopath to sort my back out after doing any. Can't see the point in suffering if you can afford to pay someone.

                        It will only be hard the 1st time, because it was lawn its a bit compacted, and I guess at the moment wet.
                        Just do a little at a time, your in no rush..The ground is too cold to plant at the moment.
