battery hens sold for 2.00 each not my thing sorry, rather pay 8.00 for a nice free range one

Same here AL same here. My ex-neighbour said 'you can't tell the difference once it's stuffed with P@xo and covered in gravy, garlic salt and pepper! Couldn't get through to him that with the free range one you don't need all that to get flavour!

I have to say it drives me mental that in this county (dunno what it's like elsewhere) the first sniff of a bank holiday or bad weather and the food shops look like the locusts have been in.

The bladdy shops only close for a day, what's the matter with people?

I can tell i do not get to the second mouthfull unless it has been running round the yard scratching in th e dust i do not entertain it uuuuggghhh.
I do like chicken but not ones filled with water..

I tried to buy a free range chicken in Morrisons y'day ... they had ONE on a huge rack of chickens. I bought it. It was �6 as opposed to �2, but there you go. We only have it once a month or so.

The battery chickens aren't labelled as such ... they're still being disguised in RSPCA Welfare/ Willow Farm / Happy Farmer stylee wrapping

It isn't about the flavour for me. Those cheap chickens have been subject to conditions that are just plain WRONG!
Only time I buy them is when the alternative is waste (reduced for quick sale at the end of the day, and few other shoppers about). Then they are edible, but on the whole, go in a curry........

I remember being horrified when I learned about the conditions cheap chickens are subjected to and we haven't bought one since (more than 4 years now). I occasionally buy one from the farmers' market, but I trust the seller and I've been buying eggs from him for a long time too - though as soon as my girls start to lay thats over.

This annoys me too, it seems the more 'natural' the brand name the grimmer their conditions. I am not squeamish about killing animals for food, but I do think we should treat them compassionately. I have signed up for Hugh Fairly-Interestings campaign for proper labelling of poultry so that producers have to admit what they are doing with their animals.

I would rather have a more expensive proper chicken now and again than a cheap but pale, tasteless excuse for one. After eating real chicken you never again think "everything tastes like chicken".

The soapbox is now free for the next person ;-)

My �9.... yep �9.... chook is spatchcocked and marinating for tomorrow's dinner........ OK OK it's a bit of a biggie even for free-range organic but we only get it once a month at the moment and left overs on Monday as well.........................

Don't particularily like sticking up for Tesco's but..............Willow Farm chicken aren't battery chicken!

No I know Snadge but it ain't quite free-rang now is it? I have search deep into my conscience to endorse the effort Tescs are making but no cheese, it's better but not good enough

It's true it's not quite free-range but I think a life lived in a spacious barn with natural light is a lot better than the life of a battery chicken.

My reason for buying free-range is purely quality - if you buy cheap (battery) chicken or eggs, you get the value of what you pay - equally if you buy free-range chickens or eggs, you pay more but get value for that cost.

I believe you'd probably be getting better nutrition by eating free range chicken once a fortnight than by eating battery chicken twice a week.

And worse still - our 'caring' government is proposing to increase the housing density of battery reared chickens to 21 per square metre!! This follows an EU directive although the British government could set a lower limit. It's barbaric!

I agree MTF which is why I'm soooo eggcited about our new farm shop 1.5 miles away that is stocking local FR chook, and...... locally produced pork and bacon - whoop.

I've always gotten most my pork and all my lamb and beef from a friend farmer but now I can get even local venison - and to cap it all they are gonna buy my veg to sell - sorted - as they say in some counties

I dont buy chickens very often as OH is veggie but when I do I dont buy cheap battery chickens. I also stopped buying battery eggs after my daughter aged 12 had to do a survey on chickens and how they are kept, the conditions etc and she visited a two places and wouldnt let me buy battery eggs again. She now row's and the cox keeps chickens and I had my first fresh laid eggs last week and will now be getting my eggs from her.
I dont agree with the way these animals are kept, after all you wouldnt treat your dog, cat or any other pet like this, and I know we dont raise them for the food chain but that doesnt mean the animals that are should be treated any differently.
