    CASH BACK SCAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    BEFORE LEAVING THE CHECK-OUT

I bought a bunch of stuff, over £150, & I glanced at my receipt as the
cashier was handing me the bags. I saw a cash-back of £40. I told her I
didn't request a cash back & to delete it. She said I'd have to take the £40
because she couldn't delete it. I told Her to call a supervisor. Supervisor
came & said I'd have to take it. I said NO! Taking the £40 would be a cash
advance against my Credit card & I wasn't paying interest on a cash
advance!!!!! If they couldn't delete it then they would have to delete the
whole order. So the supervisor had the cashier delete the whole order &
re-scan everything! The second time I looked at the electronic pad before I
signed & a cash-back of £20 popped up. At that point I told the cashier &
she deleted it. The total came out right. The cashier agreed that the
    Electronic Pad must be defective.

Obviously the cashier knew the electronic pad was defective because she
NEVER offered me the £40 at the beginning. Can you imagine how many people
went through before me & at the end of her shift how much money she
    pocketed?

Just to alert everyone. My co worker went to Milford , Sainsburys last week.
She had her items rung up by the cashier. The cashier hurried her along and
didn't give her a receipt. She asked the cashier for a receipt and the
cashier was annoyed and gave it to her. My co worker didn't look at her
receipt until later that night. The receipt showed that she asked for £20
cash back. SHE DID NOT ASK FOR CASH BACK!

My co-worker called Sainsburys who investigated but could not see the
cashier pocket the money. She then called her niece who works for the bank
and her niece told her this. This is a new scam going on. The cashier will
key in that you asked for cash back and then hand it to her friend who is
the next person in the queue.

Please, please, please check your receipts right away when using credit or
    debit cards!
This is NOT limited to Sainsburys; they are one of the largest retailers so
    they have the most incidents.
I am adding to this. My husband and I were in Sainsburys and paying with
credit card when my husband went to sign the credit card signer he just
happen to notice there was a £20 cash back added. He told the cashier that
he did not ask nor want cash back and she said this machine has been messing
up and she canceled it. We really didn't think anything of it until we read
    this email.

I wonder how many "seniors" have been, or will be, "stung" by this one????

To make matters worse ...THIS SCAM CAN BE DONE ANYWHERE, AT ANY RETAIL OR
    WHOLESALE LOCATION!!!

BEFORE LEAVING THE CHECK-OUT........CHECK YOUR RECEIPT!!!!!

I'd like to hear from someone this actually happened to.

    snopes.com: WalMart Cash Back Scam

I don't believe it happens, supermarkets would never let cashiers get away with it.

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

I got an identical e-mail forwarded to me. While snopes say it is impossible, I don't think ALL supermarkets use a system where the cashback option is chosen direct by the customer. Some places the cashier asks whether you want cashback, and in that case surely they must be the ones putting in the amount?

Certainly in the supermarkets round here the cashier asks if you want cash back and if so she/he enters the request. I suppose it is possible for them to enter a cashback request without asking the customer and to pocket the cash if not challenged.

              It's hopelessly impracticable.

The cashier pockets the money, in most supermarkets they wouldn't get away with this for long, they are monitored and it would soon be noticed.
The cashier gives the money to a friend who is following, so they manage to get a friend to follow someone they are planning ripping off, this is hoping the person doesn't notice. If the same person goes through the same cashier a couple of times, it's going to be noticed, everyday, it's going to be noticed.
It's ridiculous, this is the type of thing supermarkets have security to stop.

I'm not saying it never happens, probably at smaller stores, but widespread, impossible.

As slim as the chance may be, it's better to be made aware so I say thanks for the heads up.

i can't see this being down to the checkout operator; i can remembr when i worked in woollies for a spell, you were searched if you went to the loo. apparently tesco has a similar system. also , the checkout op.s have to sign on and off the till, so accounting for any money. when the money is counted up later in the day at the cashiers office, any discrepencies can be traced back, so i can't see that it would be worth the risk

if it was a scam, then i think it would come from much higher up ie the card provider staff. there was a scam a year or so ago, where when you went to the petrol station, your details were cloned and money was taken out of your account from some place abroad. i would imagine if this is a scam, it originated in a similar way.

I am ALWAYS asked to sign the receipt for cashback. I think this is too risky for the cashier, for it to actually happen. She says she gave you cashback, you say "no I didn't, my receipt isn't signed"

As I work for a large company on checkouts I find this appaling and quite honestly cant see it happening in our stores, camera's follow your every move, random searches all the time. We no longer as a company ask a customer if they want cash back, the onus is on the customer to ask for it. Always check your reciept any way. Make sure any offers are taken off at the end, if not go to customer services.

A customer I served the other day had gone to a rival store and had used the self serve checkout and had asked for £50 cash back ( the ones in our stores do not offer this service yet ) she got to our store and said she had forgotton to pick it up. I dont know if she was lucky enough to get it back depends if the customer behind was honest and handed it in.

There wouldn't be a till discrepancy if a cashier managed to add cashback to your bill and then not give it to you. I actually agree with Womble that is a regular scam it is probably impractical, but it could be done occasionally.
A search system would be effective... unless the till operator had an accomplice-customer to hand the money to, which would be tricky to do often, but not impossible on a 'sometimes' basis.

Everyone should ALWAYS check the amount before entering pin number. Cashier says that will be £35.99p please, what does the amount in the machine say ???? not the same ? query it before entering pin number. Its what we should all do no matter where we shop.
