  • Carpel Tunnel Syndrome

I am suffering from this on my left hand, had the right one done about 10 years ago. Yesterday I had an injection and asked to be put forward for an operation. Today it feels like I have sprained my wrist so phoned the doctors and the recepionist arranged for him to ring me, he wanted to see me, he thinks its just bruising so have to rest it but in an upright position but if it gets worse go back tomorrow. I cant do anything today it hurts just to turn on a tap or get a tissue out of a box. I know others have worse feelings today, but I am so fed up not being able to do stuff, I am always doing something. My sister once said she thought getting older was just numbers, not feeling like c**p.

My MIL had had one done and a friend has recently had her second done. It's supposed to be really good for relieving the pain - however, that doesn't help you now does it? Hope they sort something out for you soon.

thats how my shoulder makes me feel, its not the pain, i can put up with that, its the bloomin well forgetting and doing what you always do with it, same as my hip, its not that i want to put my leg in the air, but i would like to be able to throw myself out of bed in the mornings without having to think about it
feel for ya, getting old may have its advantages but............. when do i get to see some?

The first one is great I still get a bit of trouble but nothing like I did before the op and I cant knit or sew anymore which I used to do a lot of. This is the second injection this year on that wrist and it was ok for about 5 months and then it was back with a vengance. I put of going to the docs last week now I wish I had gone sooner. What with my right frozen shoulder, my right trigger finger, and have had the op on my right wrist, now my left wrist is bad I might as well shoot myself. lol My kids just say mums decrepid and they are right lol. I just want to get to my allotment grrrrrrr

Jackie - I have this too so I can sympathise. Have you had your thyroid checked as it can be a symptom of thyroid trouble - dont want to worry you Mummy J but it would be easier to get sorted (says she not sorted yet!) than an op. Take care - rest but use it lightly too. Tammy

When mine was bad the doctor gave me a splint to wear, which kept the wrist at a slightly backward tilt. It did ease the pain while I was waiting for the op, and definitely helped at night.
The injections never helped me , and when they operated on my left hand they called for the camera, then asked if I would mind featuring in a training manual, as the veins or something were arranged differently than normal, which made me more prone to problems.
I remember while I was waiting to go down another lady was saying she was there to have both done at the same time . She hadn't realise she wouldn't be able to do anything with either hand, and she lived on her own. Once several of us who had already been through it once, explained the problems she would have, she had a word and opted for one at the time.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

When I had my first one done they wouldnt do both for that reason. Over the years it has come and gone until this year. I have just got tea and somehow managed to peel a big onion and chop it up, slice some mushrooms, open a jar of sauce chuck in a can of tomatoes add some soya mince, and cook some pasta.Any thing else will have to wait. One min It feels better the next just as bad, took some ibroprufen so that has helped might take some codeine before I go to bed.

Had my bad hand done and its improved out of all measure, would recommend it.
I found it wasn't as inhibiting as I'd thought, when bandaged up, your fingers are free and it doesn't hurt to use them. I was also impressed that they open the hand along one of the palm lines so you can't even see a scar. There was very little pain too and it's made a huge difference to me.

I had a bad shoulder too and was very lucky to find that one of the doctors in my practice was an expert in injecting steroids into the joint, painful injection but complete recovery.

But there's always something for us ageing mortals, now wrestling with varicose veins....

                    Good luck with your treatment.
                    best wishes
                    Sue

Lot better today, as I said I had right hand done 10 ish years ago and the scar is only just visable, I was off work for six weeks instead of the recomended three weeks because the scar didnt heal very well and at the time I was working on a deli counter !!!
It was also hard changing nappies on my daughter !!! My shoulder I had minipulated under GA in the summer and that is ok just still a bit stiff and with exercise is getting better I can almost straighten my arm.

My mum has had carpal tunnel syndrome, and she was offered acupuncture at her local hospital for it a couple of years back. This was on the NHS, so she didn't have to pay extra for it or anything. She also wore a splint thing at times too. But she really rated the acupuncture for pain and symptom relief and as yet hasn't had to have the op.

I havent been offered accupuncture but I do know someone who is qualified trouble is it would cost a lot of money to go private.

I have a Great Aunt who, at the grand old age of 92, successfully tried acupuncture for the first time a couple of weeks ago. She's gone all New Age now and can't stop going on about it! She'd tried everything and can't believe how "young" she feels now...
