  • Calling all sea anglers

So the Europeans have had their way and there are now even newer regulations reguarding the Bass ( or sea bass as some people call them , why i dont understand as we only have one species of bass here but hey ).

From the first of january this year, you are now not allowed to take home a bass caught on rod and line, yep thats right, it is now catch and release only untill the first of july and even then, the bag for recreational anglers has now been reduced to one ( yep thats 1 ) bass a day.

Be carefull out there for ignorance will not avoid the fine these marthas will hit you with.

I can only assume it's to do with their breeding season. Stocks must be diminishing. Can only be good for the fish if so.

and yet it's okay to catch them by the boatload off shore apparently.

(my knowledge here is limited...the above nugget being all I managed to glean from my husband's expletive filled rant..)

Most of the bass I see at the fish mongers comes from the Med or even further east.

I really would not mind it if they had proper reasons for it but they let the big boys do what they want, even now the boats/ships especially trawler´s still get away with murder!!! not the odd person who take the odd fish! they are paying lip service!!

It sounds like they are treating Bass as a course fish? which have there own breeding season. Its a new one on me as I thought fish in the sea bred all year?

I don't think there are many up our way, at least I've never caught one. It is worrying that the ban may be expanded to other species though. So as well as under size fish the trawler men will have to sling full size Bass which are dead by then, back into the water!

I used to be a fish monger. All the bass we ever had in the shop was farmed. But to be honest I couldn't tell you where it has been farmed.

I've not said much on this topic because I don't want to get into EU fishing politics. All I will say is my feelings are very strong and I do care about the fish, not the politics.
I will be saying nothing more about the matter on the open forum.

Yes SP, i posted simply to stop someone getting a wicked fine, but to be honest how they can police it is beyond me.
Protection for the fish it is, but we havehad bass nurserys for years, areas where you can not keep fish from for a long time, most anglers would openly agree to a close season but its the slaughter out at sea that gets us going.

By the way , it wasnt so long ago that Bass were hardly heard of, it was only once the cod got into serious trouble and it was rebranded as the "sea bass" by the faddy people that they actually became popular, just goes to show what a few celeb chefs can do lolz.

most of the farmed fish in the supermarkets come from Greece, farmed like our or rather your ( scottish ) salmon is.

If they want to protect them as I think they should, then it should be right across the board. I appreciate we are talking about peoples livelihood here so it's a difficult call.

In Ireland where bass fishing is only recreational (commercial is totally banned) it has been shown to improve the economy, have a read here ...... Irish Bass Fishing | Britishseafishing.co.uk
