Calling all electricians, advice please.

My BIL got his electrician's qualification doing evenings at one of the local colleges. My hubby seems to think it cost him about £1000 all in.

It took him a fair while as he did not study full time.

Dunno about sparkies but OH's cousin trained as a plumber recently and that was definitely quite a few grand. Suppose you need to look at the courses, some cheaper ones might not actually give him what he needs.

Without knowing what hubby does now its not easy to give advice.

However be aware there are companies out there that charge high fees for course's that are basically pants.

In my opinon his first port of call should be his local college for a chat with one of the instructors about his options. They would be able to advise on what work experience he would need as well as to what free/low cost instruction is available also if there are training grants available. Just going for paper work qualifications may not be an option.

I don't know about electricians but in my own profession (registered gas engineer) you can go to college for 3 years get all your NVQ's and you would still not be allowed to practice. You would first have to sit national approved assessments which cost yet again but you could not even sign up for these without first having on the job training with a registered engineer who would have to sign off your modules of training.

I am often approached by both my local college to take people and individuals trying to progress through this stage of their qualifications most of whom are willing to work with me at no cost to myself except I have to insure them.

As has already been said the best starting place would be your local college of technology,coupled with thinking on what level he wants to achieve & whether he wishes to work for a company or be self-employed as it will have a direct impact on the courses he will/may need to take.
