  • Boys comics

We are meeting our niece and her quite mature ten year old only child.
We thought we would get him some comics to read while we natter,
but looking in the local newsagent, couldnt see anything we thought
suitable. Could the team recommend any please?

Anything to do with computers or computer games perhaps?

My kids are in their teens now but at that age one of them started reading (still does!) the Robert Muchamore books - the cherub series.

I've never really bought them comics- they are often a similar price to a book.

Both mine have Kindles and our friends and relatives often buy them a gift voucher for Amazon and they can choose their own.

...think they start at a £1

Can you call your niece and ask what he's interested in, rather than buying some generic boys' comics which he might not like? At that age I might have liked gardening magazines, or anything to do with horses or nature or science or how to make things.

One of my nephews loves Calvin and Hobbes cartoons, and has done since he was a young kid.

          Thanks for your replies.
We still could not find anything that we thought suitable,
so in the end bought a ten quid remote controlled helicoptor
          from B and M.
          Thanks again.

My son must have got through loads of remote controlled things, unfortunately they all came to a sorry end. The best one was a flying saucer, it was amazing...until he whizzed it into a wall and several bits flew off...sigh.

I wish I'd had toys like that. I used to like visiting my boy cousins because I could play with their Lego. We were an all girl family until I was 10, and girls' toys never seemed to be so interesting.

The whole girl / boy toy thing is ridiculous and reinforces stereotypes and reduces opportunities. Such a shame, would be much better if kids could chose what they are interested in and just play and learn with whatever that happens to be. That said, the shops don't help, you are almost blinded by the bright pink in the girls section of a big toy store near here and most of the stuff is reinforcing outdated domestic roles in the house, not the same creative fun that can be had from a high percentages of the boys stuff. Last time I went in there I found it very depressing, left and went to a book shop instead.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I was given a fantastic toy last year - a reusable solid fuel rocket, which I prepared with help from my daughter. We went out into the field behind our house and launched it - and watched it gently float back to earth landing on the roof of a nearby block of flats Doh!
I'm only 52 so I'm still allowed toys lol
What do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter?
                      Pumpkin pi.

Did you pop on your spiderman suit to scale the building to retrieve it?

My daughter has suggested that most clothes could be regarded as equally for boys or girls. She considers there's no reason why there are separate boys and girls sections for clothes.

My daughters best friends dad is a fireman, so I suggested they retrieved it as a useful training exercise - which he promptly arranged the following week
