  • Best Song Lyric You've Ever Heard

Okay, this is a spin off from Wayne's 'Best Phrase' thread.

What's the best song lyric ever...

Mine is a Jack Johnson from 'Better Together':

    'Love is the answer,
at least for most of the questions of my heart'
    How beautiful is that!?!

So, what's your choice for 'Best song lyric'? Off you go, and no squabbling!

And mine is from James 'Sit down next to me'.

Those who feel the breath of sadness
    Sit down next to me
Those who find they're touched by madness
    Sit down next to me
    Those who find themselves ridiculous
    Sit down next to me

    How wry is that?

Why didn't Noah just swat those 2 greenflies?

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

For sheer quality of lyric, I really like the Decemberist's Rakes Song - although it may not be everyone's cup of tea, lyrically its excellent. (In my very 'umble opinion )

'Bow down before the one you serve, you're gonna get what you deserve.'

Nine Inch Nails, Head Like a Hole.

          Also,

'The first one on their knees will do anything for me, you know you'll get what's yours'

          by a friend's band.

Notice a theme here; quite worried now!!!

I'd never heard of it so I looked it up. Excuse me whilst I go and cut my own throat.

As I thought I'd lost this album forever and found it this morning, for today it has to be......

Started typing it and realised it would be far easier to copy and paste.

Wishbone Ash - Leaf and Stream

Find myself beside a stream of empty thought,
Like a leaf that's fallen to the ground,
And carried by the flow of water to my dreams
                  Woken only by your sound.

Alone Ive walked this path for many years,
Listened to the wind that calls my name.
The weeping trees of yesterday look so sad,
Await your breath of spring again.

                  Far beyond the hills,
Where earth and sky will meet again,
Are shadows like an opening hand.
                  Control the secrets
That Ive yet to find, and wonder at
The light in which they stand.

                    Or:

                    Là ci darem la mano,
                    Là mi dirai di sì,
                    Vedi, non è lontano,
                    Partiam, ben mio, da qui.

                    Vorrei, e non vorrei,
Mi trema un poco il cor
                    Felice, è ver, sarei,
                    Ma può burlami ancor.

                    Serves you right.

I'm a huge fan of Aimee Mann, and think she's a fantatsic lyricist.

                      From "4th of July"

                      "Today's the fourth of july
                      Another june has gone by
And when they light up our town I just think
What a waste of gunpowder and sky
I'm certain that I am alone
In harbouring thoughts of our home
It's one of my faults that I can't quell my past
I ought to have gotten it gone

                      Oh, baby, I wonder -
If when you are older -
                      Someday-
                      You'll wake up
And say, 'my god, I should have told her -
                      What would it take?
But now here I am and the world's gotten colder
And she's got the river down which I sold her.'

                      So that's today's memory lane
With all the pathos and pain
Another chapter in a book where the chapters are endless
                      And they're always the same
A verse, then a verse, and refrain

                      Oh, baby, I wonder -
If when you are older -
                      Someday-
                      You'll wake up
And say, 'my god, I should have told her -
                      What would it take?
But now here I am and the world's gotten colder
And she's got the river down which I sold her.' "

One that comes to mind is

                        If loving you is wrong
I don't want to be right
If being right means living without you
I'd rather live wrong than right
                        Cheers

As far as oddly wonderful lyrics go,there's a Turkish song that I'm trying to think of.I think by a chap called Mustafa Sandal?
From what I remember it was about how he'd found the woman of his drems and he was going to make her love him and knit him a cardi! It's going to bug me now all afternoon.
the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.
