  • Bee Attack

I have been attacked by a swarm of honeybees tonight that have decided to take up residence in my veg patch

I was picking raspberries when I got a sting on my arm, at first I though it was nettles, but there was a bee. As I stood up, I stood up straight into a cloud of them, all rather angry.

I ran for it, shouting the dogs (who were with me) and ran screaming all the way up the garden.

I have been stung several time, most noteably on my eyelid, where the bee kindly left it's sting.

The dogs have been stung several times too, and Mr OWG has also been got, by the bees that were on the dogs when we got into the house. He managed to stand on one as well

We've all taken antihistamines, and have ice packs, but my eyelid/eye has swollen up to horrid proportions and I feel like I've been punched in the face. Mr OWG can't walk and even the dogs are wretched.

We've got the number of a local "bee lady" to call tomorrow, as they can't be destroyed cos they're honeybees.

As you can imagine, this house is not a happy one tonight

OWG, I really feel for you all.
I disturbed a wasps nest in my compostr bin and counted myself lucky to get away with one sting.
I hope you all feel better soon.

Sorry to hear you have all had such a rotten time. I hope the pain lessens soon.

My brother found a swarm of honeybeas have somehow managed to colonise behind the plasterboard wall in his living room. I don't understand how they got there, but it's costing quite a bit to get rid of them as his wall needs to be removed to get at them, and the insurance company seems reluctant to help. He and his wife have been stung serveral times as the bees come out and get 'stuck' in the living room.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

What a shame OWG. All those stings are terrible. The best treatment is ice packs to keep the swelling down and an anti histamine.
As for the bees, your bee woman will sort them out tomorrow.
We had the same problem a couple of years age.
A small swarm of about 11,000 bees (bee keepers estimate) arived in our garden. Quite scary. Nobody got stung. The bee keeper got it all sorted no problem.
Good luck and hope it all goes well.
Do let us know what happens.

            Update

            Morning all

After my bee attack last night, I have woken up this morning with one side of my face all swollen up - look like I've had a punch from Ricky Hatton

Mr OWG seems to have broken his foot/a toe last night as well in the commotion, as it's all purple and black...

So we've got one person who can physically drive, but can't see, and one who can't drive but can see Not sure how we're going to get to the doctors!

I still need to go into work today somehow, as I have 4 new PC's arriving (2 for me and my boss) which I have to set up. Maybe I will go in, set them up and come home.

We're ringing the local bee lady once it gets to a decent hour. Because they are honeybees, they aren't classed as pests and are actually protected; so she will come and remove the next/queen for us.

Oh well, at least I can relax if I'm only going in to work for part of the day! Now, where's that cold compress.....

Do you not fancy keeping them??
In the UK the honeybee is rapidly declining in numbers. There is a virus that is killing them off. Get a hive in the corner of your plot and dream of free honey!!

p.s. Will the bee lady be keeping them??

OWG I am so sorry, bee stings can be awful. I am starting to react badly to them!

Wish I was closer, I have a brand new hive just waiting for a swarm... not many about this year!

Hope you all recover soon. Anti his cream, Hay fever tablets, ice packs and a little time!
A glass of ice cold white helps too

Oh ouch! Take another anti-histamine (double dose if nec, but don't drive after!). I do feel for you with the swollen face. My ex once left a tent flap open without me knowing, when camping in France. A million mozzes went straight past him and got me all down the side of the face, over the eye, lips, everything. I didn't even need to use my bestest French in the pharmacy, he just handed me the packet and wrote down '3x dose'. I got a lot of 'domestic violence' comments on that holiday!!

Hope your bee lady sorts them out. I don't think you'll be wanting to keep them after that experience!!

                            Update

                            Thought I'd post an update....

We went to the doctors this morning - I am on very strong AB's as apparantly stings round the eyes have a nasty habit of getting infected
I'm also to take painkillers as well, to reduce the swelling and pain round my eye (there have been shooting pains all the way down to my jaw).
TBH, I look worse than I feel. It's poor OH who has suffered.

The doctor told us to go straight to A&E this morning, which we did. We were in and out in about 2 hours altogether, and the staff were superb. OH has fractured his big toe, and it's quite a bad fracture. Unfortunately, his foot was so swollen that they haven't been able to do anything but bandage it up and give him crutches, and tell him to put no weight at all on it. He has to go to the fracture clinic tomorrow in the hope that they can do more with it.

They could put a cast on, which would probably mean us cancelling our holidays (camping in Wales and walking holiday in Scotland) and the Dr said that worst case scenario is that they decide to put a little screw in it to keep the toe in it's right place

We won't know anything until tomorrow.

The buzzies that attacked me were WASPS! The council have been now as a matter of urgency and removed the nest, which was the size of a football from our veg patch. They were "wood wasps", not common wasps, who usually nest in trees. The reason a sting was left in, is probably because I swatted the wasp as it was stinging me, inadvertently disembowlling it

All in all, not a good start to August!
