Ok - so it's a long shot, but I bet you grapes don't let me down...

I came across the discs for this pc role playing game whilst having a clear out of some old computer stuff the other day, and recalling how much fun it was to play (about 10yrs ago), I decided to see if it would load on the laptop.

It seemed to load up fine on the XP, and I had some fun with it for a couple of sessions, then it just crashed out the program (back into the windows screen, and when I went back to the program tab, it came up with a non-responding message), and now will load up, but crashes out after just a few minutes.

I tried to go on to a Baldurs gate forum, but it was so huge and forbidding, I didn't really know how to phrase my question, or where to post it...

Anyone got any clues how to revive this, or should I just hang up my old RP games, and leave the fun to the next generation on XBox/PS etc....?

I did the same thing the other day with Age Of Empires, excellent game. Can remember having a copy of BG as well.

If you don't have any saved games, try removing it then reload, the game should run fine(in theory) but if not go on the BG forum and ask about XP compatibility issues. or try this BioWare: Baldur's Gate I and II Frequently Asked Questions

try right clicking the icon on your desktop, and click run in windows 98 or 95 compatibility mode, sometimes that works ..... if not, uninstall it, then don't let it auto run, click on my computer, right click the cd rom drive icon, and select it from there.

or there may be a patch or something, someone else had the same problem here http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genme...topic=41235445

Computer says no! (we're too old) It happened to me y'day with i-Tunes. I decided to finally reload and sort out my old iPod, but could I get dratted i-Tunes to download to my pooter? It just wasn't having it.
        * Install, fine. Click to use ... error message. Uninstall. Reinstall. Over and over and over. Damn technology.

          1. check webbly for new/updated drivers
          2. spend ages on 1.
          3. pour a G&T
          4. open Vine and read garden stuff
          5. pour another G&T whilst still carrying out 1 & 2

Oh - I love you all!

Like a lot of you, I know a little about computers, and have had various hardware/software incompatability issues in the past which are normally sorted out by the tried and tested method of undertaking 15 different solutions, none of which work, over a period of 3 or 4 hours when you cannot spare the time, then do number 1 again for the hell of it and find it now works....sends you bloody crosseyed!

It really is not good for your blood pressure, and I thought that if I wanted to play this game again (I know, hardly essential in the world order, but it was such a lot of fun! ), I was going to have to spend hours tinkering around, getting sidetracked, frustrated and all with no guarantee of success...

So, I've decided that I'm going to spend ONE HOUR on trying sorting this out - just for the look of the thing, I suspect - but Bride has put a remarkably tempting carrot there with an updated version for less than a tenner....and christmas is upon us soon...

we used to play runescape, then switched to world of warcraft but that got expensive to play at a tenner each a month. so I found this

                  Perfect World International

free to play, and a lot of fun, great graphics, its very new but based on the same game engine as WoW. check it out i highly recommend it if you are into quest games.

and you get to fly if you are a winged elf character

no, they can all fly, but the other characters you have to be a higher lvl to buy the wings, winged elfs get them at the first lvl. and later you can get cool mounts too he he.

I did try WOW as the boys both play now and again. I can't get to grips with it. Will take a look at the one you suggest if I ever get my new lappy (this poor old beast just about manages the vine and runescape)

Hazel, I will ask Aranthos when he gets in from college to see if he can help with your problem.

I wondered if there would be a patch, but didn't know where to start looking, as the search results were a bit overwhelming, but for some reason this link won't load up....?

Thanks, Shirley - much appreciated. I'll try to have a crack at solving this after college tonight. As I say, I'm not going to spend ages going round in circles on this one (when there is an easy updated replacement for the entire game - and then some - on Amazon), but it's worth seeing if an easy download patch is out there which would sort it out.

Well, I still can't connect to the gamefaqs site at all, but I found a patch from another site which was released years ago - shortly after game was released - which was supposed to clear up a load of bugs that were in the program.

I've downloaded the patch, and I had a quick play with it last night and it seems to be holding up.

                            Boo.

I wanted an excuse to buy the xp version that Bride pointed me to on Amazon, and I haven't got one now!

*thinks - might buy it anyway with the Christmas bonus wot I have just awarded myself

Thanks again for your help on this one, grapes!

I asked the lad to have a look see what was available, he didn't come up with anything but said if you are totally stuck he has solutions (not sure about the legality of that)
