  • Arrrrrgh! This is doing my head in.

Amongst those that know me I am known for speaking my mind, yet remaining diplomatic wherever possible.

I get in trouble with LadyWayne for potentially 'hurting people's feelings'. I'd rather be honest with people and know where I stand than pussy-footing about and treading on eggshells. If you're honest, you don't have to remember a mis-truth, or let anyone else know 'the story' in case they are asked the same thing.

    So, here's the 'arrrgh' bit;

At Christmas we do the whole Secret Santa thing, and with LadyWayne's family it's all 'organised' in that each person writes down a list of things they'd like and the other person pulls a name from a hat and buys whatever the budget allows from the list. My family like to maintain a level of 'fun' and just buy whatever they think the person will like.

This year my sisters fiance' got me. He bought me a radio in the shape of a shed (nice thought - but I rarely listen to the radio in the garden, but I appreciate the gesture), he also bought me a mug with break dancing moves on it and 'how-to' instructions (he is aware I have had two ops on my back), and lastly he bought me two tickets to go and see a Pink Floyd show at a local theatre. This gift includes babysitting so that LadyWayne and I can go out and have dinner.

It's a really nice gesture and I do appreciate it - but I really don't like Pink Floyd at the best of times, and this 'act' aren't even a renowned tribute act. Never the less, LadyWayne convinced me to keep schtum and accept the gift graciously - which I have done.

The show is on this Saturday and we're trying to work out what to do. The show starts at 7:30, but Bean will not be in bed before 7 - so I either suggest that my sister and her fiance try and feed Bean, bathe him and then try and put him to bed (which on past experience will likely be a disaster), or we say we'll maybe get to the show just about on time or a bit late.

    Here's the catcher;

If we do that - we will not have time to get dinner before, and if we leave dinner until after the show we won't eat until around 10pm.

So, I was thinking of skipping the show and just going for dinner (something LadyWayne and I would prefer), or we go to the show as planned, and skip out at the interval.

I do wish I'd have been honest, this would be so much easier!!

If it was me Wayne, I would have a word with my Sis, tell her how grateful I was with the gesture but it really isn't my cup of tea & would her & boyfriend like to go instead so as not to waste the tkts.

Does anyone need to know you and LW just skipped the show and went and had a lovely meal instead? But then I guess you would need to come clean and say you missed the show or tell porkies and say wow what a show! So can you just tell fibs and say missed the show - rots terrible traffic/parking?

Out of interest Wayne, why did he think you liked Pink Floyd?

There is not an easy answer to this and time is running short. I would grab the bull by the horns and tell your sister about your doubts. You do not say what time the baby sitting stint starts but could you not have Bean bathed and comforted earlier than usual leaving sister to feed and settle him till falls asleep. Have a snack earlier in the day and maybe bring in a takeaway to share on your return.

He's a 'drum'n'bass' DJ - not really his bag. It's kind of why he bought them for me, knowing how I like 'rock' music.

Therein lies another potential escape route sealed off - the traffic's no problem (it's 20 mins from our house, and 10 minutes from theirs). Parking is more than ample.

I was in favour of having a word with my sis, but then there's the potential that she actually had some involvement in selection/organisation of the gift, so LadyWayne suggested not...

                I couldn't pretend I'd been!...and I'd never remember the fib in later months/years.

Peeps often get you gifts which they like- if they're available to babysit for you- then why not offer the tickets to them and ask them to babysit another night so you can go out for a meal sometime , just the two of you?
Tell them you were being polite and the idea was exceptionally generous ,but ....

                yup, I'd be honest-

                or

leave Bean with them much earlier and have a quick bar nosh and just go to the concert...it can't be worse than me having to sit and watch football in the freezing cold for hours upon hours unpon hours....
Does LW like them? If so- just go, smile and try and enjoy the atmosphere.
( I used to count the number of red bobble hats when I was dragged week after week to watch Manchester United play...yup- George Best, Bobby Charlton...yawn yawn...see- everyone's different!)

                            Okay, Here's the plan:

First get a book of matches, put this in your inside jacket pocket, this will come in useful later. Also take your mobile phone.
Book a taxi for 7:15 under the name "Mr Edwards", but don't tell them where you want to go. Ensure Lady Wayne wears a scarf. You should take an umbrella.
Bath Bean and put him to bed around the time the taxi arrives, as you leave the house, leave the umbrella by the door.
Once in the taxi ask the driver to drive to drive to the end of your street and wait. Once their, call your friends, pretend to be a market research company, if they refuse to talk thank them and hang up.
Now, this is the clever bit, when you've finished the call.....

....on second thoughts, just come clean.

Go, you never know, you might just enjoy it.
I would imagine your sister will be disappointed to hear that their gift wasn't appreciated.
I would go and say nothing, after all it is a night out.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.
