  • Anyone know what this pot is?

Mr Shortie and I went for a wander round the local charity shops yesterday. I was mainly looking for a smaller, heavy dish to put the chook treats in as the tuppawear keeps being tipped....

We managed to get quite a few kitchen bits - 2 meat joint holding/cutting boards (one for us, one for the inlaws), 4 earthenware single portion pie dishes, a garlic storage pot (just Googled it - £13!!! I paid £2 ) and two of the below things.

I picked them up as I really liked the look and feel of them, but they've got me intruiged now as to what the heck they actually are...! They were bought to sit and look pretty on the kitchen window ledge.

They're a pot with a wide lip, and a lid with a handle. Oddly, the handle has what I presume to be a breathing hole pushed through the middle right through, and they have a seperate dish/saucer. When I brought them home and stopped to think about them more, I wonder if they're some sort of curry (or similar) dish with a hole in the top to stop the food sweating, and the dish to protect hands / the table

Does anyone know what these things actually are?

They are very well made if they are - very uniform etc but I did wonder if they were from a smaller pottery as there are no markings on them (I was going to Google the company to see if I could spot them in the range to see what they are for)

Never mind the pots - why is your garden so tidy and why is the windowsill without seedlings at this time of year..............
Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.

We used to see a lot of artisan potters at the craft fairs. They produce wonderful dishes, but they don't have any significant purpose, they just look nice.

That one looks like it might be a small casserole dish with a saucer to protect the table from the heat of the dish.

Lol... that's the white thing on the right outside my window - plastic greenhouse as I didn't have enough windowsill for my seedlings

Seasprout, I wondered about a salt pot when I saw the ventilation hole in the top but then wondered why the saucer at the bottom if it was..

I would have bought those too! I'm sure I had a Denby casserole dish that had a hole in the lid - until I broke the lid! Could the saucer be for resting the serving spoons on?
If you can see a maker's stamp on it there are websites to identify the manufacturer.

Looks more like a lidded soup bowl than anything else, but the lid looks out of proportion - does it really belong?

It's a medieval propagator, put a t-light in the lid which becomes the base (yes, they had t-lights in medieval times........), then put the pot over the t-light, then the base becomes the tray to stand your seed pots on............Well, you did ask.

Hmmm...my 'strange/daft guess of the day' is that you put water in the base to keep whatever is in the pot cool.
As the lid has a hole, the pot has to be for storing something that it doesn't matter if flies/dust get at it, but needs to breathe so it doesn't rot.
Maybe a garlic store to cooled prevent it sprouting in the dark?

(Have to say BM- I MUCH prefer your idea- they may have smouldered moss in there - not T-lights!!! )
