    Anyone here drink red wine? You don't have to have grown the grapes yourself :)

    I want to buy a nice bottle of red wine to give someone as a 'thank you' pressie.

    I don't drink red wine, nor does anyone I know. So, is anyone here able to suggest which kind to consider buying please?

    Do you know whether they like light wines or more deeply flavoured ones? It can also depend a bit how much you want to spend. Personally I like the deep fruity ones. I love rioja, montepulciano, pinot noir, amarone, barolo and brunello - in escalating price order! We maybe have 1 bottle of brunello per year...The Oyster Bay label is a good & reliable one, and so is Campo Vieja, in my opinion.

    If you have a wine merchants near you they should be able to help too if they're worth their salt. Shouldn't matter whether you're buying one bottle or 12.

      Haven't got a clue what their preference is. I don't know them at all but they helped my daughter and I wanted to send them a thank you card and token gift. I was told by someone else they liked red wine and that was it.

      No wine merchants anywhere near, I'd have to drive for miles to find one. I was hoping folks on here would be just as informative.

        I agree with Sparrow, to add to the list tempranillo ,pinotage,chianti,Sangiovese are also very nice

          Why not have a look at an online supplier like Oddbins? They're reliable and will deliver single bottles. They'll charge you delivery, but it'll save you the drive to get to a wine merchant. Make sure you sort by price. When I first looked, it sorted by alphabetical order, meaning the first page contained some pretty expensive bottles!

          If you don't know much about the preferences of the people you're buying it for, it is hard to choose. If you're not sure, you can't go far wrong with a sparkling wine of some variety though. Even if they don't drink it straight away, they'll save it for a special occasion.

            Also depends on how much you want to pay. A lovely wine is 'The Stump Jump' it's an Australian wine...not often nice but this one is...available online around £10 a bottle.

              Cheat ......... Go to a local restaurant & ask to buy a bottle of 'house red', it won't be anything fancy, but it will be a good 'all rounder' selected by the 'taster' to please a wide range of palates & be suitable to accompany a wide range of meals.

                Did someone say Red wine

                Agree with Jay..Stump Jump is nice,as is the Campo...

                Best bet is ask for a recommendation for a nice "mid priced" wine if you are not going to do it over the web..we could give you loads here but no guarantee where you go will have them...

                  That's great, some good suggestions thanks everyone. I didn't realise you could get one bottle of something delivered, I thought it would have had to be several at a time.

                    I like red wine but buy from the cheap racks! Not too keen on the heavyreds - a Merlot is about right for me.

                      Bottles of wine (of any colour) tend to get treated as a type of currency anyway. If someone doesn't like a particular type they will just pass it one to someone else who does.

                      And you can't go wrong with Merlot - but if it's red it really needs to be 13.5%+

                            I personally like a drop of Chateauneuf du Pape which is a lovely smooth rich flavour and can get for about a tenner or more if you want to pay it.
                            Thinking about it, I feel the need to toddle off and open a bottle ..... Just to make sure what I'm telling you is right, of course

                              Single figures, preferably under £6.00 per bottle, if it's not corked, not vinegar and tastes good, I'm in! Lol

                              Seriously though, occasionally you can find a really nice budget wine.
