  • Anyone have problems voting yesterday?

The news seems to be full of problems involved in voting. Fortunately we had no problem. Was anyone else unable to vote or stuck in long queues?

No, I was the only one in the polling station.

I'm just gutted that the LibDems only got a 1% increase in votes and the BNP got a 1.2% increase.
Says something about the UK. Shame.

Nick Griffin was trounced though, saying "the "hugely high" turnout of 61.8% counted against him.

The winner of Barking Margaret Hodge said the people of Barking had sent a clear message to the BNP: "Pack your bags and go."

I'm just glad I'm Sheffield Central and not Sheffield Hallam, where people were turned away when the ballot closed, unable to cast their vote. My OH (who incidentally doesn't need any excuse) blames the students who were apparently without cards and unable to decide where they live. My daughter (who as I mentioned on another thread hasn't voted for many years) surprised me by saying that she was going to vote this time, but she lives in the Hallam constituency and I've yet to hear if she was able to cast her vote.

No problems here only me and OH with a trickle of people coming and going. I would have thought that with 15 hours of voting time however busy we are, would be time enough, no voting places are that far away from our homes, but obviously not in some places with a higher turnout of people wanting to vote.
          The system needs looking at.

The news has been saying that people were turned away due to the higher turn out. I can't believe that. Surely the electoral register will give a maximum number of people who are entitled to vote and you accomodate that number, whether they all turn up or not!

                Ne pas probleme pour moi!

Our village hall was empty - LadyWayne and I were the only ones in the hall - but people were coming and going before and after us.

                72.2% turnout in our constituency.

There were 2 other people at my station.
Were people turned away due to a lack of polling slips or because it was closing time?

I would submit that the people who voted during the day are more likely to be unemployed/unable to work/house wives/husbands and would vote more one way whereas the people who were turned away in the late afternoon/evening would be more likely to be employed and may vote another way.
Wouldn't that heavily skew the results anyway?

We officially have a hung parliament! I wonder if those who couldn't vote would have made any difference? Be interesting to see which party the Lib Dems side with.

with 15 hours to vote in, i think there was plenty of time to vote, whether in work or not.

i dont think it would scew the results much. my take on it is that a lot of last minute voters were in the pub first. but to be honest, i think if they turned up they should have been able to vote. the fact is, unless each person has one vote that goes directly into a central count, and not into a district, a lot of our individual votes arent worth much anyway.

certainly the smaller or newer parties dont get a fair chance with this system, and i have just heard on news that the person who holds the seat previously gets a certain amount of votes before the count even begins! surely this isnt right? i personally didnt vote for the party i agree most with, because i knew that they didnt stand a chance, and that therefore with this system, my vote would be wasted. therefore i had to vote for what i believe to be the lesser of 2 evils, ie. a tactical vote. if each person's vote truly counted for anything, i wouldnt have to do that.

am i the only one who thought the press and media coverage was quite appallingly biased towards the 3 main parties- did any others actually get any real chance to discuss thier policies and views in an in depth way? no.
