  • Any hedgehog behaviourists?

We moved in two weeks ago, and I saw one hedgehog down behind the shed in the abandoned allotment area. He was lovely.

Well, youngest was out by the road waiting for a friend to pick her up last night, and she said she heard the noisiest snuffling snorty noises in the front garden, so went to explore, expecting a badger or something really big, and it was two hedgehogs.

One was still, partly curled up, and making all the snorty noises (VERY loud apparently) and another one was walking around it. In a circle. And had been doing it so long that it had flattened the grass in a circuit.

She watched for a bit and then went back to the road and left them to it, but was totally puzzled.

    Now so am I.

So, what on earth are my hedgehogs up to? Has anyone ever heard of them doing barn dancing?

My daughter is generally very reliable - and was adamant that this marching one had walked a trackway all the way around, and that it was the noisiest thing she'd heard for a long time.

    Are my hedgehogs normal?

We feed our hogs each night, now they even seem to wait for us, I can call them and in moments of me putting the food down - turn around and they are their almost at my feet Mr HF and I sit on the garden bench watching them. Can step right over them and they don't seem to care much.

Oh Headfry what do you feed them?

If I have a mummy in waiting in residence she'll need feeding this time of year I'm sure.

I LOVE this house, we are so lucky to have found it.

Go here for ideas on what to feed a hedgehog. At the moment I am feeding my gardens hedgehog freeze-dried insects (birdfood) soaked in water and he/she just wolfs them down.

How lovely and how lucky you are, particularly HF, I'm so jealous. It's good to think you are looking after them.

We buy Spikes Dinner though there are others around that are also very good.
We also make sure they have water close to hand. They eat a little (crunch crunch) then have a drink, then back to the crunch crunch - they make a heck of a noise!
We have have a neighbour who also feeds the hogs- we cover when each other is away or late home! She has counted as many as five hogs in view at one time We have bought hog boxes and they have been used!
I think I am so lucky too.....we love our hogs, birds and bats....not forgetting the frogs and if I am really lucky a newt!
                  A note to add-
We have a tiny back garden, parts are untidy 'ish, a small pond and bird feeders, bird and bat boxes.... I am such a softy really - nutter some would say, guessing they maybe right.
