    Antibiotics & Alcohol.

    Right...I've always known....or at least thought I did...that you shouldn't do them both at the same time.(which is why I put off starting this course until after the weekend...last weekend)
    Anyways,on reading the little information leaflet I could find no mention about avoiding/refraining from alcohol???So,I've been googling & all I can find(maybe I've been selectively looking)is non medical people saying you shouldn't...afterall,everyone knows it counteracts with the antibiotics & renders them useless.I've also found a couple of more scientifically sounding pages say that it's all an old wives tale...apparently started to discourage promiscuity through drunkeness when said antibiotics were prescribed for STD's.

    So...Can I???

    Not that I NEED to of course...more that it just makes for a slightly more relaxed weekend!

    Yes you can.
    Contrary to popular belief, there are only about 3 antibiotics that you can't drink with. Even those aren't dangerous, alcohol just stops the anitbiotics working properly.

    That said, I'm not a doctor nor medically trained, so I would seek professional guidance first. But in my experience, if it's not in the contraindications then it's fine.

      My mother's a pharmacist and she has been known to have a glass or two whilst on antibiotics. Draw from that what you will...

        I just knew I could rely on you Lovvies!!!

        Although it's not a necessity,a glass of something of a Friday night greatly assists to rid the mind of the madness of the week & set for a weekend of sangfroid...(ness???)

          I vaguely remember one particular antibiotic where the nausea side effect caused by it can be made a lot worse by alcohol mixing with it. I too would check with the GP/pharmacist to see what they say.

            I thought that when I first saw it, but if you consider it's French and pronounced "san-fwah" it becomes a little more attractive.

              Yep totally agree with the aforesaid. Apparently if it don't say on the label there is no problem. If it does say do it anyway (if you're that way inclined). Always remember a little of what you fancy does you good.

                  I now agree...a weekend of san~fwah does sound a little more appealing than one of san~groid....a glass or two of something nice can only make it more so!(shame I haven't got any San~gria!

                        I'm not convinced the French would understand you if you pronounced it like that. The 'w' is actually a rolled 'r' and it's virtually impossible to write the word phonetically for an English language speaker in my opinion
                        Also it is pronounced very differently in different regions

                        As far as the alcohol and antibiotics is concerned, I heard some years ago that it was an old wives tale but do know people who find they get drunk quicker if they are taking them.

                          If alcohol is to be avoided it will tell you in the notes.

                          Getting bladdered probably isn't advised in case you throw up the medicine

                            That is probably because their resistance is lowered by the infection requiring them to take antibiotics.

                              Apart from some antibiotics creating nasty side effects, alcohol certainly 'pushes' medication through the system..so you don't absorb the full dose.
