  • Another spoon of brickdust in your tea?

I'm now sympathising with those of you who have had any building work done on your houses. It's only been going on for a week now, but despite being in the office for 4 hours I can still taste brickdust!

I came home from work last friday and my nextdoor neighbour informed me that her husband had been made redundant from Quibells after 35 years there having been told 2 hours before he was due in "not to turn up"!

Being a handy sort of guy I offered him some plastering work for a little cash-in-hand, but it turned out that the water damage over my kitchen window had rotted the lintel and dropped the bricks above about half an inch so it's been a bigger job.

And to add to the mess I decided to make the most of the disruption and get him to knock my fireplace out and knock my sitting room and dining room through into one.

So now that the entire downstairs is covered in dust and bricks; I'm confined to my bedroom and microwaving meals in the spareroom!

Anyone got any suggestions to stay sane during this period?

I do hope you got building regulations approval for all this knocking things down? If you didn't it could make life complicated should you wish to sell in a year or so!
As for the dust problem, the only answer is to eat out!

That would be the most logical plan, but my family live 2 hours away so I couldn't commute.
I definitely think eating out is the best plan, especially since I had a minestrone and grit soup on Wednesday when I didn't credit the dust with being able to filter through the cupboard doors!

It currently feels like this scene: (anyone who can name the film gets extra points )

Dust can get ANYWHERE! Under BlackBerry and Mighty Mouse Trackballs, for example.

Minestrone soup is disgusting anyway Ollie - added dust was probably an improvement!

True, although it might take a chisel.

A lot of people don't like Minestrone soup. I don't understand it, what's not to like?
Admittedly, people can never understand not liking something they like.

Yeah, go stay in a hotel

We've had all our floors, doors & the two boilers replaced over the last year. It's not been much work and I've been very organised about it, but it's still really quite disruptive and annoying

I couldn't bear to have major works done, I'd have to go abroad I think

our house extension been going on for 18 months. We had a year gap before that after knocking 3 rooms into one. The dust is still settling. It does for YONKS.

One morning we all had our brekkie perched on the stairs as it was the only available place to sit LOL

                      Worth it though

First of all I congratulate you on your neighbourhood watch effort. Secondly, why not become a paying lodger next door. You never know you may get your own home ready for habitation sooner than you thought.
