  • Annoying or What?

    Does any body else get irate over the indiscriminate use of words or phrases that are totally inappropriate to the context? The other day, my wife and I watched a cookery programme, and the lady presenter tried the savoury sauce and announced, in a loud voice;
    "That is SOOOO orgasmic!"

    Either she is easily pleased or has the wierdest sex life! (Body chocolate? Gravy? Strawberries out of the belly button?)

    Ok, I am going to lie down in a cool dark room now with a cold compress on my head

      BBC - Dumbing down eh????

      As a side to that ...I've been listening to French radio whist scrubbing stones ( don't ask!!!!)
      ..and there's a sweet little song that's been repeated over and over and I've been humming away trying to work out what the lyrics are.
      "Thankyou...thankyou very very much"...la la ....

      then it suddenly dawned on me ...it's not 'thankyou '...surely not thinks I ..and ended up Googling it..."please don't stay in touch"

      It turns out to be a song by Lily Allen " F*** you very much"

      ( I've been humming it round the shops and in public places!!!!!!)

      now my question is ....have the BBC banned it...cos it certainly would have been banned not so long ago???? That surely would be a key indicator of BBC dumbing down!

                      I hate those adverts for sofas, and dining room suites, and cars, where they can't seem to work out what three numbers next to each other should be - "Only Three Nine Nine!" instead of Three Hundred and Ninety Nine. Grrrrrr, are you supposed to be fooled into thinking it's cheaper because they don't say the price properly?!

                        It's the questions...they are so easy. It bugs me because it's just revenue generating, it doesn't challenge you in any way. But the best one I've heard was on a local radio gardening spot;

                        'What colour are radishes? Are they A) Red, B) Yellow or C) Purple?'

                        Well, I've a packet of seeds for radish and they contain D) All of the above! (and some)

                          Not restricted to teenagers I'm afraid - I know grown people that use it. Randomly.

                          Don't. My birthday has now been shortened to "nine eleven". It's always been September the 11th to me.

                          What riles me is when people on the telebox and alike use the phrase "oh, that's better than sex" - they're clearly doing it wrong!

                            I was reading a trashy mag the other day, some stupid article about faddy diets and noticed that they'd used the word Liquidated instead of liquidised.

                            Its was something like: nuts and fruit liquidated in a food processor.

                            As I wish the article had been instead of being published!!

                              The one that gets me is - suffering from suspected swine flu (heart attack or whatever)
                              It should be - suspected of suffering from swine flu (heart attack etc).
                              Nobody seems to know what words mean anymore - including the quality press and the BBC.
                              Other words just used indiscriminately are
                              affect / effect
                              to / too / two
                              there / their / they're.
                              It all just seems to be stick in any word - it will do fine.

                              From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.
