Anyone else ever notice the amount of cr*p there is for growing your own, most of it seem so unnecessary.

I wondered what you meant for a minute there, but I see what you mean now. I think we only buy a lot of "unnecessary" stuff if we're not watching the pennies and I think most dedicated growers are "thrifty" anyway!

          There is for any hobby.

When I worked in retail, we always had to try the 'added sale', ie if someone buys a pen, sell them spare cartridges, some nice paper, some stamps perhaps

If they bought a paperback, we'd try to sell them a plastic cover for it, or the author's entire backlist

Did you want to make a point about anything in particular Roadcar

I find the right kind of cr*p (horse, cow and chicken) makes my veg grow much better.
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom

I'm sure a lot of it is directed at non-gardeners who need to by a Birthday or Xmas pressie for a gardening relative!!

Mind you- what one gardener thinks is a waste of money can be very helpful/a pleasure to another gardener....everybody is different!

The problem is that advertisers and manufacture's are catering for a huge market.
People just starting out in gardening have a completely different need list to others who have gardened for a long time.
Some people require instant results and other prefer traditional methods.
As with any other leisure pursuit there are sub cultures to cater for i.e greenhouse gardening, hydoponics, organic specialists, the list is endless.

All we can do is try and pick the wheat from the chaff and get on with it!

to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

The cr&p that I object to is the cheap and nasty quality stuff which is packaged up as gifts at Christmas etc and bought by people who are new or are buying for a friend. The mark up is very high and it's a total waste of money. As somebody has said, the sales people for most hobbies tout their wares and need to sell people things they don't want / need to keep in business. I find that not visiting the shops very often works really well to avoid this stuff although people do keep trying to buy it for me for Christmas! My mum complains that she gets the equivalent rubbish for her golfing hobby too. They only sell it because people buy it.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Nooooooo - I HATE pink with a passion - little girls dressed in fifteen different pinks, make we wanna puke!

Having said that, my Secateurs have bright red handles, and I'm always leaving them in other peoples' gardens! LOL
