  • Aaaarrggh 2 burst pipes

hi what a nightmare week ive had the pipes burst heres my story. we had a new boiler fitted as our old one was eating gas at an aweful rate, so got a codenser combi one. plumber was great only took a day cleaned up after him self costs were reasonable, on time and really got on with the job no dawdling.
however we found that the people who built the extention on the house 7 years earlier SAS and their plumber where more than cowboys and due to this the plumber has ended up with extra work to do. the old boiler SAS fitted was too small for the house so why it was eating gas. the plumber nearly electrocuted himself as SAS had left un earthed wires dangling in the loft. and as for SAS s piping weve just discovered that when they built the extension they quoted for copper piping and have fitted plastic ones in loft and only copper where we can see ( rip of gits ), plastic cannot take standard water pressure very well this is why old plumbers had turned our water pressure from old boiler down most plumbers avoid plastic, and when piping from one room to the next instead of just putting the pipes to the next room they have run them down length of house the doubled bag on themselfs no wonder old boiler was on overtime was heating over 10metres of pipe for nothing. our great plumber as i said made brill job of the new boiler and after a 11 hours putting it in left for home half an hour later water started appearing on the bathroom floor, called the plumber who had not quite reached home bless he came straite back the plastic piping old plumbers should not have fitted had burst under the bath, he fixed it but said the plastic pipes may keep doing this so to keep an eye on it, famous last words next evening puddle on the carpet this time next to a wall, yep another plastic pipe burst this time in the wall! our new best friend the new plumber came and has done a tempory fix this time as we have give him extra business as are having all the plastic replaced to the copper it should have been, funny how SAS are no longer building houses. were just luck we found a good honest plumber to put others mistakes right no wonder he was highly recommended.

anyone else had any cowboy problems?. put it on here lets name an shame!

if you live in nottinghamshire and need a good honest trustworthy plumber please email me at percycharlie@aol.com and il email his phone number and name to you, he came recommended to use,
lets spread word of the good so the bad dont get a look in.

anyway the mopping up is finished sucked up what i could with the carpet shampooer and put the dehumidifyer on to do the rest, it does pinch the water from the loo though

i look for to reading your stories or responses all the best percy charlie

Oh God, I'm going to have nightmares after reading this. My house is full of bodge-jobs from the previous owners. I'm already at lower pressure from the mains tap as water otherwise leaks in the kitchen, but it's copper piping there! There is another leak elsewhere, but the new boiler does away with that pipe. I lie awake some nights, as the water leaks out of the loft (through the overflow), where they never replaced a faulty ball-cock. Again, those tanks will go when the combi-boiler goes in, but I'm incredibly worried about mains pressure on these old pipes. You've confirmed my worst nightmare.

ETA: It's awkward for us, as we know the previous owners. I've already been tempted to punch the guy more than once for the lies he told to what is supposed to be a family friend!

What kind of plastic pipe? PVC or CPVC? I have never heard of anyone using plstic pipe for heating other than PEX.

My husband has been trying to solve the problem with noisy pipes when the central heating comes on in the morning. It is driving us mad. It starts with the boiler clicking on (the boiler is only two years old but the piping is older) then it starts tick tick tick, it sounds like the blessed clock in the alligator! in Peter Pan. Driving me mad. I've given up running the heating in the mornings now. Sorry for the rant. I hope it was the alligator in Peter Pan if you know what I mean! But he's still not solved the problem. Then there's the dripping tap in the kitchen which has been dripping for six months and then there's the dripping noise in the airing cupboard in the bathroom that's been going for years, he even boughts the parts to mend that one. The list is endless. No wonder I've taken to drink..... I think I will go on a plumbers course and see if I can do it myself. (When he sees this maybe he will get on with them)

Thermal expansion of pipes. Perhaps having pipes too tight to wood joists so as they expand they creep accross the wood making that sound.

I actually quite like the tick tick tick, it reminds me when I wake that I still have 1/2 hour tucked under the duvet before I have to get up. Much more pleasant than an alarm.

i have no idea what kind of plastic it is its white and i know plumbers use it for hot water piping but my good plumbers said most avoid it cos its crap and after my experience id have to agree. was going to see sas as they had taken to running a hardware shop to see what they would do but guess what i found they closed up a few weeks ago cos they went bust surprise surprise. will be having all new copper pipe fitted and not running zigzag and doubling back across the loft soon so will be even moor energy efficient. sorry if ive scared anyone with my horror story but i think there should be a county list of recommended plumbers/builders ect and a shamed list so good ones get work and bad ones dont what do you think? at least my plants are doing well!

If it's PVC it's not supposed to be used for hot water...it'l fail but you already know that

There is kind of already, its through Corgi, if your plumber is listed, they don't underwrite their work, but at least it shows their competence. I would personally like to see a tradesman website that could allow you to comment on and give feedback to tradesmen in your area, kind of like ebay, but I am sure it could be open to manipulation.

Many areas have liscencing authorities. Work is supposed to be subject to a permit, that can only be done by a liscensed professional, requiriing an inspection. It does not read like the work described was permitted and inspected.

In the UK now, if you are planning on undertaking this kind of work, you not only have to ensure that the professional is qualified, but you have to ensure that they certificate the work after completion. Otherwise you will have to pay for this work to be tested prior to selling your property as part of the new Home Information Packs introduced last year.

the plumber sas used was corgi registered i think he must have escaped inspections. the new plumber has said corgi can ring you up and ask to inspect his work. but oh to have water pressure especially for the shower and the shower head connected to the tapes, OH is pleased it now doesnt take 10 to 15 mins just to rinse my hair when washing it just a minute or 2 so i dont hog the bathroom now.
