  • >_< I think I melted my eyes making chutney!

For some reason it didn't occur to me that using a food processor for grating onions would have a similar effect to manually grating onions. So I took no care whatsoever. My eyes are still burning over a quarter of an hour later and show no sign of easing up.

Good job the chutney involves leaving the toms and eeeeeevil onion in a bowl till tomorrow, the pain may stop by then!

I do have cucumber, thanks. Course, I'll probably chutney it later, so must remember to save some!

I'm making two batches (first time ever, so hoping not to burn it!), the glutney from the river cottage book (with less raisins and a green tomato/tomatillo mix) and the Earthbabe recipe that folks were liking lots from here. Hope I like them - wasn't keen on an apple one that I tried and both these do have apple in them. There was a great chutney with tomatoes in it at the local farm shop but I forgot to look at the ingredients.

As with most things, very much a matter of personal taste, but thats what i see as part of the fun, find a good basic recipe and fine tune to your own spec!-somethings you just cant buy. Let us know how it turns out.

                Will do.

Had to abandon cooking tonight, missed the bit of the recipe that says it takes three hours to cook. Good job I noticed just before turning on the heat - I'd have been up till midnight with eyes that are still sore!

I think you will need swim goggles! I also found the vinegar in the long cooking process for chutney made my eyes sore, so watch out tomorrow. Open the windows and outside door and close the door into the rest of the house - the smell does linger.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

I saw on a old TV program that eating a bread crust helps while chopping onions is supposed to work, it doesn't stop my tears though.
