I really enjoy the programme - it's fun to watch & it's great to hear the birds singing & see some sunshine; if it gets a few more people sowing a few veg, then it will have done its job. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who gets really excited when I dig up a few veg!

Mr H particularly liked the Swedish girl - he was rather partial to her accent. Sadly, when I tried to copy it, I sounded more like the Swedish chef from the muppets

I'm sorry to say I was expecting a little more from the program. There seemed to be little body or substance to it.
I think the BBC should think about putting a little more information and advice in to the content. It struck me as being more like visual meringue. All froth and no depth.
Program information 5/10
Carol's enthusiasm 9/10

No change to last week then, it's a pity that the information can't be a bit broader for newbies and more seasoned growers. I have given it 2 weeks but can't see it being something I bother with again.

This happens all the time in Wales. I thank the Lord I'm Welsh but Loosing Gardeners World to Scrum 5 each Friday is crazy.
I tune in to BBC Scotland, Northern Ireland or England to watch. (note: All these other countries play Rugby too) we just get extra Rugby helpings here in Wales.

Default Cappucino Gardening

I'm afraid I watched the second episode and couldn't get the Director's instructions out of my head:

'Just run through that field one more time will you luvvie'
'A little more enthusiasm please...
'Can you just giggle a bit more on that one'

Sorry Carol, but I wish they'd got a real, informative director instead of an art school version, and do stick to gardening sweetheart, please.

I really don't mean to be cruel, but they've done the woman no favours at all.

It's good Friday night entertainment, the second one had less of the arty shots of the first one which was good. It was good to see that the main family featured are doing well but I would have liked to know what varieties they'd grown and how the RHS women were making best use of their plot. I was particularly looking forward to the bit about the balcony gardener as I'm thinking of increasing the amounts of crops I grow in pots and was interested to see what varieties were working. Didn't get any of this with the programme and I was very disappointed that you couldn't download a info sheet from the internet with this back up info - suppose they want you to buy the book! In some way my disappointment is due to Carol's enthusiasm being so infectious that I want to know more and it's annoying when you find out that it's not there. Not sure I've explained this properly but I know what I mean!

Having watched both episodes now, I have to say that after the 2nd one I now find Carol's enthusiasm a bit grating.....

A bit more structure with regards to the growing calendar wouldn't go amiss. Its alright but I wouldn't care if I missed it. Oh well.

I'm with the general consensus here. The programme's very charming but quite vacuous. Nice to watch but nothing to be learned. A pity, it looks like a great opportunity wasted.

The RHS is running information & special days to tie in with The 'Grow Your Own Veg.' programme. You can join up on their site & be sent e-tips, I've just received one which has a couple of useful short videos on compost & seed sowing-good for beginners & Harlow Carr in Yorks. is having a special veg. growing day on 10th Feb.http://www.rhs.org.uk/vegetables/techniques.asp

I think the idea is to encourage novice gardeners to have a go, not to worry about the supposed 'mysticism' about growing veg and not no worry too much about failures - just to find out why something didn't work and to know better next time. If you want to know details about when to sow, you can always ready the back of the seed packets. And there are loads of books out there with other good information. I think Carol set out deliberately not to lay the info on too thick, as that can so easily just end up confusing newbies. But there should be another programme for more seasoned allotmenteers, I agree.

Default Changed my mind

I would like to report that I have changed my mind about this programme. I watched it tonight in an obviously different frame of mind and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's obviously not a 'this is how to' but imparts snippets of information in a kindly and relaxed way - a bit like the vine really!

I found myself feeling a range of emotions from happy to jealous, cross to sad, which would probably be the best any film produciton could offer. Glad I watched it and will continue to do so.

I just want to know how she grew her rice for the rice and peas meal a the end!!

Its too arty farty....all those fake 8mm film moments...I must be in a bad mood today cos her voice was annoying me. And I ave up when the bint that HAD to help her carry the massively heavy 3ft of gutter was her daughter. "its all on the BBC dear and you may get your own series"....

Yes annoying little squeeks and terrible script writing and direction. the 8mm Arty Farty stuff made me nauseus so did the odd camera angles. I think the programme is aimed at the Middle classes as are all garden programmes in my opinion. They seem to suggest that the working classes have no time for gardening.
Like gardening programmes that visit homes they are always Posh people.

The book is good. I got it for £6 through a book club at work. Lots of detailed info. Probably duplicates other published books but I don't have any.
