I once had a discussion with a perfectly strange young man on a train,(Strange ,as in I had never met him before!) on the difference between standard of living and quality of life.
Between Exeter St.David's and Taunton Deane, he was convinced that the two were one and the same,i.e. if you work all the hour God sends, wear youself to a frazzle and are stressed to death you can enjoy a state of the art apartment and can afford to holiday in Mauritius for two weeks every year, wear designer clothes and eat in all the best restaurants. That,to him,was quality of life.
BUT- he longed for a dog,had since childhood and due to his and his wife's strenuous work commitments couldn't have one.
He did moot suggestions such as "doggy nannies" etc.
By the time we got to Manchester Central I hope he was convinced that standard of living and quality of life were two quite separate things.

Do you make a habit of revealing your innermost thoughts to strange men on long train journeys Polly
