    Is it a stupid idea?

    I am building a raised bed between us and the next door neighbor, our dogs spend the day barking at each other, I'm hoping this will help stop that as well as letting me get some planting done without breaking my back too much.

    I'm on a really low budget and don't have a car so really cant go around collecting scrap materials or anything. I'm planning on building my raised bed with Log Roll.

    It seemed like a good idea, but now everything I read says don't do it, its a waste of time :/ I was going to go with this UK Garden Fencing - Garden Border Log Roll Edging in the 18" so that I can fill it up to a reasonable height after bashing a good chunk of it into the ground. I don't need it to last forever. At least this year, maybe another 2 or 3 and then once we have a can or whatever I can think about making it with bricks.

    Is this going to work at all? Or is it just a bad idea?

    How long is your bed going to be?

      It's an expensive idea!
      The rolls will need to be securely fixed as they will bulge a bit due to the soil behind it.


      Yes- it will work for a few years until the metal wire behind corrodes.

      Are you sure your dog wouldn't just jump on top of the new bed and damage the plants?

        Rusty - the bed will be quite long, the length of the garden is perhaps 15 feet, maybe a bit more. I was thinking of perhaps two beds with gap in between for my potato planters?
        Nicos - No I am not sure at all that she wont jump on top of it and use it as a step to get into next door! I'm thinking that perhaps chicken wire fencing would help that job but again it is more expense.

        Gosh I'm really not sure what to do

          I'm on my phone, so a bit hard to post a link, but there is a place on the internet which sells second-quality decking boards quite cheaply. They also deliver. The boards aren't suitable to be walked on but are perfect for bed sides. If you can't find the site I'll post a link later.

                I'd suggest a little Dog training for both the Canines in question!

                When your Dog goes and barks at the neighbour, call it back and praise it. It's only 'protecting' you from the other Dog. Get your Neighbour to do the same, and eventually they'll both get the message.

                  I was about to suggest the same. I don't understand why people put up with bad behaviours, or just accept them as "normal". ???


                  My puppy used to bark & whine & howl, when we got her. It only took a few days training her out of it, with positive reinforcement, not punishment (although I did bang my hand hard on the glass when she'd worked herself up into a particularly hysterical crying fit: it snapped her out of it, then when she calmed, I rewarded her with food treats & fuss).

                  She still barks, but only on command. The command is "who IS it?" or "who's THAT?". Then, a quick "tsssssk, that's enough now" and she stops again.

                    Thanks for the advice Glutton 4 and Two Sheds, I will look at that website.
                    I know that the barking is an issue, although in all honesty, my dog is usually fine, if she is outside by herself she never barks, in truth I just have bad neighbors. Their dog is hardly ever in the house, they encourage my dog to bark and even go so far as to get her to jump up at the fence to the them. These aren't people that will help the situation and seem to do whatever they can to make it worse. I try to limit the amount of times my dog goes into the yard, but really I cant keep her in all the time and our daily walks wont satisfy all of her toileting needs. I have just started a new job so get less time with her than I would like and my other half who is at home with her all day isn't capable of walking her given his current back problems. I still need to deal with the issue - I understand that, I just want to distance my dog from the neighbors so that they don't continue to wind her up so much.

                    I still really want a raised bed though! For my veggie gardening

                        Our dog lives next to another dog: they don't bark all the time. They'll have a little go, but both know to shut up when they're told to


                        On the other side of the road are 2 yappy spaniels that have had no training whatsoever. They bark & bark all day long, until the adults go outside to drag them indoors
