    New lawn

    Hi all
    After doing up our garden over the summer (putting shed and decking up and me slowly pinching more space from our three year old playing area for my veg patch) the remaining 'grass' area needs re-seeding as what isn't dandelion is some other weed or just an empty patch. What is the best way to do this? We don't really want to dig it all up, it's still quite a large area and would be a VERY large job. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated thanks

      I made two brand new lawns this summer just by seeding got it from the garden centre which germinated in 4 days we now have nice thick lawn an no weeds to date did this back at the end of July

        You need to sort out any underlying problems before you spend any money and time on the new lawn.

        Is your lawn shady? Mossy? Waterlogged?

        Spend a bit more on the right variety of seed and it'll save you in the long run.

          Worth the effort

          You can fix a messy lawn but you need to do your prep. It's easier and cheaper than replacing the whole lot but you do really need to apply a targetted weedkiller to get rid of the weeds first. I followed these instructions in my mum's backgarden and it worked a treat.

          I rang the company for advice first and they stressed that you should NOT bury the seeds too deeply (1-2 inches only for the fork holes) as this prevents them germinating.

            A picture would be useful to see what you're working with? My inlaws just did their lawn by moving turf from their new drive to their kids play area. Absolute waste of time and effort in my opinion. The turf wasn't cut to a uniform depth, the sub soil wasn't levelled properly and the turf has loads of weeds in it! Not what I'd be happy with but each to their own.
