  • A new garden bench from old bed frame.

Walking home from the local shops I noticed a bed frame had been put out to be taken away and dumped. I thought to myself that would make a nice looking garden bench/garden feature. Luckily most parts of the frame were still there so I decided to take it home the headboard is so heavy I just about managed to carry it home, I only live a few minutes down the road. I spent a couple of hours Friday and Saturday morning putting it together.

Now trying to decide if I should stain it or leave the colour as it is, what do you think?

Looks good. Your only consideration will be to make it weatherproof..........the colour choice is personal.

I think that looks amazing - like one of those posh Lutyens benches that cost around £130!
        I like the colour, myself.
        Lovely. Well done you.

                  Wow very nice. Looks good.
Quite like the colour as it is but like Bigmally said I'd be worried about it not being water proof. Would hate to see it ruined.

Looks lovely. Just watch the joints, if they are glued interior glue won't stand up to outside conditions. Perhaps dowels or screws would secure them.

Thank you all for your comments.

I did loosen the joints which were quite loose already and used Titebond III ultimate wood glue to stick everything back in place, for additional strength I added corner brackets to hold everything together nice and tight. I will also add several more coats of outdoor wood protection and finally a coat or two of good exterior varnish. All the wood used came from the original bed frame so no extra wood needed.

I have been so taken by the fact this rather wonderful frame was destined for a landfill somewhere I’m working on a Gumtree style website for my local area to encourage people to list items they don’t want before paying the local council to have it taken away or dumping it in the street somewhere. The website is still very much a work in progress and I have many things to consider i.e. online safety, cnline contact details and so on, need to check how other similar sites deal with it. Also be good if I could get the local council support but I guess it may not be in there interest to send paying customers away to have they stuff removed for free.

Have any of you used such sites I would be very interested in your experiences if you have.

Thanks again for you very kind comments and suggestions.

                              R.
