  • Min and max thermometer.....question?

A guy came into the store asking for a min and max thermometer, I didnt know what one was.

Ive just got a normal one in my gh, I wondered do you guys use one?

If so what do you do if it has been very low in temp during the night?

Ive always thought that you cant turn up a paraffin heater due to the black soot it give off?

    Bit mystified by these.

    Thanks guys

I treated myself last year to a couple of basic ones and just bought another one. I am really pleased with them and they give a better idea as to sow, wait, cover things and so on.

Yep i bought one last year also for about a tenner at amazon.
Gives you present temp, highest and lowest.
I basically use the low temp as a guide as to when to put my toms out and bring them back in in the days when their seedlings.
Also of course you need to know the fluctuations between min temps b4 your toms and chillis go out to their final position, worth every penny in my eyes.

I have two sorry three in my greenhouse. One with the sensor at bench height and one at head height and one on the ground.

You MUST ensure they are not in the sun or the High readings will be meaningless.

Mmm so they are used by quite a few growers then?

I wonder why we dont sell them? I am going to see about getting them stocked.

Ive just got one off ebay for a fiver, a new little gadget to learn about.

So.. What is the min temp drop that you should go by before you put your toms out side?

                Thanks guys

For Toms, I use a guide of 10c overnight minimum (for greenhouse growing). Don't forget we can also have cold snaps so 10c over a couple of weeks may be safer. Then it's a matter of keeping the fleece handy if a drop is forecast.

I have one from l1dl/Ald1 on my kitchen windowsill with the probe dangling outside.
It tells you what the min or max temp has been - it doesn't forecast what is going to happen next (like how low it will go overnight). You have to do that yourself

I've had a couple of the non digital ones in the past that I managed to break. I've now got a couple of digital ones. The only problem they is a degree difference between them.

Cptn, this is a product from a company called Lascar. My greenhouse is in range of a wi-fi router, so the sensor in the greenhouse sends data to my PC over the wi-fi network, which monitors in real time and does graphs, alarms and such like.

                            It's not cheap though.

Assuming your wifi router is connected to the internet, this product alternatively lets you store data in the Cloud so that you can keep an eye on things from your mobile phone. Personally I can't be bothered with that caper. Besides you have to pay a fee for data storage, which is fair enough but not worth it for me.

Here's a link to the Lascar wi-fi product range: EL-WiFi Data Logger

Lascar does other stuff as well which doesn't do the wi-fi thing, might be more suitable for you. Look around the site and you'll find it.

There's an old thread on here somewhere where I go into a bit more detail on what I was looking for, why I chose this one and how I got on with configuring it (it was easy).
