  • herbicides, ones that keep grass target weeds

Im looking for a herbicide that targets weeds but leaves the grass.

Anyone know of any good ones?

A great organic, low cost method is to purchase a gallon jug of white vinegar. (you can also buy a stronger form at most shops, but standard grocery store vinegar works too). Mix in two tablespoons of washing up liquid. The washing up liquid helps the vinegar to adhere to the weeds/plants you are trying to kill. Put this in a spray bottle. You will want to apply the spray in the morning on a day when it is going to be hot and sunny. This works quite well, is safe for pets, children and the environment. To add a booster for tough weeds, you can mix in a cup of plain white salt

If you have just sown grass, then you need to wait for it to establish. Otherwise I found Verdone worked. Creeping buttercup was dying within one day, chickweed was slower and some may survive.

It'll be interesting to hear how that goes. Verdone poisons the grass, so when you mow after applying, you cannot compost the cuttings, but must bin them. I do wonder how long it would take to break down in compost.

Internet searching suggests that it is non selective and kills all plants including grass?

Wash your hands after using, it contains clopyralid which persists through into shop bought compost. One drop in an Olympic sized swimming pool is enough to kill a tomato plant.

Hand weeding every time for me. The only risk with that is pulling up a plant that's not a "weed".

When I have spot treated with Verdone I have used the cuttings afterwards on the compost . . . but if treating a large area I have binned the clippings.

yeah I would just shove the clippings into the weed burning bin.

I haven't done anything to the lawn since starting this post so might leave it for a while see if I can muster up the will to hand weed again.

I had ideas of being virtuous and hand weeding, but with roughly 300 square metres of lawn, I'd spend all my life pulling weeds. I guess a weed free lawn is not natural anyway.

I agree - who needs a weed free lawn?
What "weeds" do you want rid of, Jen?

Lawn sand, either purchased or home made will get rid of most weeds and green up your lawn as well.

Do all you can to improve the grass, lush grass smothers most weeds and those it doesn't are easy to pull up. Selective weed killers are nasty, years ago we forced by the ministry of agriculture to spray our grassland (due to thistles scratching the legs of the poor ramblers)with MCPA, it killed all the weeds ok but I never saw a cowslip or buttercup again. The same rambling society later complained about the lack of wild flowers.
