  • Any Ideas for making a cheap cold frame?

I don't have a greenhouse on my plot but hope to make a couple of cold frames - but here's the rub - I don't really do diy - anyone have any simple ways to lash a cold frame together?

Look round skips for an old wooden or MDF cupboard, or an old rubber or plastic cold water tank, or a bath... and look for someone having new windows and blag some of the ones being taken out to lay across the top. It wont look pretty but will work.

Find somewhere that sells and installs windows and ask them if they've got a couple frames (ideally with glass) you can have. Then knock some posts into the ground and position frames before securing them. I simply drilled a few holes into the plastic of the frames and cable tied them to the posts.

This is what I built last year.

Cheers Hamsey, I'll be knocking on a couple of local business's later today asking for their old windows.
        Great advice :-)

You want to be careful using those leaded-lights - some Jobsworth will slap a Grade I Listing Building order on your cold frame!!

I got the window first and made the base to fit.
