    Yes I know not exactly sunflowers but my Jerusalem Artichokes are related to them.

    Horrible little critters to eat but we leave the flower heads (yes you are right they have not got any yet!), dry them out and feed the birdies in the winter.

          This is the only one thats survived for me. The year of the Sunflower hasn't been an especially good one here.

                            Fred the sunflower

                            Fred was initially doomed as a seed in a bag of guinea pig food. He adroitly avoided the voracious little beasts and dropped to the cage floor where he was soon covered over. He then spent 12 lonely months in a smelly compost bin before being unceremoniously dragged out and dumped on the ground, where he was viciously attacked by a mad bloke with a rotavator. Despite his experiences Fred rose to be head and shoulders above the crowd. Happy (sunflower) ending.
