We get long rows of them on the power wire at the end of the garden. OH calls them 'The Lads'. E.g. 'The Lads are back!'

I can remember when I was a kid that the sky above Glasgow City Centre used to move with huge flocks numbering tens of thousands coming into roost on the buildings at night. The council tried everything - from loudspeakers playing distress calls and various birds of prey calls, to actually bringing in men with hawks, but all to no avail. They ended up netting the buildings and the starlings moved on.
I must say that a huge flock of starlings swooping about against a red sunset is a most impressive sight and not one I am ever likely to forget.

I don't know why they would bother to net against starlings - they're far less trouble than seagulls. Starlings don't nest in town centres, and they don't usually roost on the buildings - they just gather there before they fly off into open country to roost. It's an impressive sight watching them gather, the formations they make are awesome.
