I have a Japanese Wisteria trained to a 15 ft tall south facing wall. Width is approx 40 ft. I have been told the plant is approx 25 yrs old and it flowers very well. My problem is that it has not been pruned for several years and has grown out from the wall and is monopolising my terrace. When viewed from the side it is like an upturned U shape, it has grown to the wall top and then fallen away from the wall and come back down to ground level. I would like the plant to be tight back to the wall and then I could follow the textbook twice yearly pruning, but I am unsure how it would react to severe cutting back.
Any advice welcome, thanks in advance.
