  • What flowers are wild flowers?

Hello. I have a plot of about 3m by 4m which has two small established apple trees growing on it. I would like to turn this area into a wildflower lawn but dont really know where to start. At the minute the ground is bare due to being cover with carpeting for ages.
Ive tried growing mr fothergills wild meadow mix in pots before but they didnt do very well. Will anything happen if i just sow grass seeds and wildflower seeds or can anyone recommend a certain type or types of flower seeds and grass seeds to sow. I dont mind just grow one type of flower if they bloom all season long.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and a very short step by step guide would be even better. Ive read loads online but none names any specific seeds or plants.

The Beechgrove gardening program did a comparison last year of different wild meadow seed mixes. Here (hopefully) is a link to the accompanying factsheet.....scroll right down to the bottom.

I think the point of the mixes is to provide variety rather than one type of flower. Also, grasses must be weak. Grasses are natures pioneer plants and as such, tend to smother out the flowers quite quickly.

Whatever you choose to sow you will need to sort out protection from birds. 3x4m is a lot of ground to try and net.

        A couple of questions first!

When you say lawn, do you mean you'll be walking on it and mowing it?

Is it in your garden or on an allotment?
