  • Trailing flowers what are you putting in your hanging baskets this year?

So I managed to get this massive hanging basked, I mean massive. Ill have to measure it as I know we dont sell this size or near to it at our shop.. So tge plant is to have it quite high so I can have really long trailing flowers. What do you guys have in your baskets?

If you're looking for something to bulk it out, you can't go far wrong with Nasturtiums..............apart from the damn blackfly.

I would go with begonias you could use non-stop in the centre and trailing begonias round the edges, they will give you colour with plenty of flower, self deadhead and don't need a lot of water
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

Rary's idea of begonias is a good one. The bloke 4 doors down from me has begonias in his baskets. They fill up quickly to a great big ball of flowers and once they start flowering, they don't stop till the first frosts. And as Rary says, the dead flowers drop off by themselves, which saves a lot of work.

They need full sun though, which is why I don't grow them in my north facing back garden.

I plan on trying fuchsias there this year, as my usual petunias have been hit quite badly with aphids the last year or two which makes them horribly sticky until predators deal with the pests.

Ive got a basked out there at the minwith dwarf sweet williams in which has faired very well since oct and still blooming away but the bf is complaing as he doesnt like up right flowers in hanging baskets.

It will be on a souh or east wall which gets blistering sun till 2pm ooh I cant wait!

Non stop begonias is a fab idea, I love petunias too.

mothhawk if I were you I would give them a try as I grow them is semi-shade, I think temperature is more important than bright sunlight, so if you can give them shelter from the wind try a basket.

I like to have a variety in my baskets/hanging wall planter. So a mix of different leaves/flowers. As you have a huge hanging basket,if you wanted to,you could put a tumbler tomato as a centrepiece, surrounded by a couple of petunia, nasturtium (I like the aphid magnetism) begonias, trailing geraniums. Nice to have fruits growing everywhere you can, especially a full sun position. Last year I had nasturtium in my basket a couple of inches from a tomato plant, the nasturtium was covered in aphids but none on the tomato plant. Companian planting is good pest control.

I'm doing scented baskets/planters this year. Filling them with really smelly stuff. Dill, peppermint, sweet peas, anise pimpinella, lavenders, chamomile, phlox. Going to put them as near the house as possible so we can benefit from the scents.

Toms, sugar snap peas, nastur - thingies (can't spell it) and fuchsia's.

Well that's the plan but I know how my 'plans' tend to end up
