  • Tetrapanax papyrifera 'rex'

I have finally acquired a TETRAPANAX PAPYRIFERA 'REX' and wondered if I could grow it in a pot. Has anyone here grown one in a pot? It really is a fabulous huge monster so not really holding up much hope that I could keep it restricted in a pot. Its a bit of a godzilla of the plant world. lol
    Thanks Sarah

Haha! What a fab plant. Personally, I'd say you'll need a ruddy great big pot!

Oh, it does look fab. Though it says it's only half hardy so will need a very sheltered spot, thick mulch in Winter and fingers crossed it reappears in spring if you grow in in the ground. Or a large pot on wheels!!!

I've got one in a pot in my garden. It's maybe 4 years old and came from a friend as a tiny rooted sucker ( I can't remember of they are called suckers or pups!) . It spent the 2 cold winters outside unprotected and was fine, just defoliated. The last winter it grew.

I wouldn't out it in the ground in your average garden tbh. I saw some specimens at ventnor botanic gardens that were as tall as a house and pupping all over the place. I'm hoping to move somewhere with a bit of land and I'll plant it there. They are incredible plants and look fantastic with ferns and bamboo which my garden at home mostly is.

I gave mine a deep top dressing with homemade compost this year and that's the first 'feed' it's ever had. My mum has one too but hers isn't as big.

I've seen ones with leaves a meter wide... They need to go in the ground to get to that sort of size.
