  • Sweetpeas

I've built a sweetpea trellis on the side of my shed today and bought some sweetpea plug plants at the weekend.
They were outside so will they be ok to plant out on the allotment now? Will they need any kind of protection?

Sweet peas are very hardy but it's still worth ensuring that the plants are properly used to the cold, just because they were outside when you bought them doesn't mean that they're used to it .

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

My sweet peas are still in the greenhouse but they are only at the 3 leaf stage. How tall are yours?

Look a bit tender to me - mine are still in the GH or on the window sill.

The first sign of sunshine & the shops get their stands out and lead folk into a false sense on security. Keep them in a greenhouse for a while if you can, when they get to 4/5 leaves nip out the tops to promote new sideshoots. They'll then grow into healthier bushy plants.

I sowed mine in the autumn, they are staying in the cold frame for a few weeks yet. I've a feeling that if I put them out now they'll just feed the wood pigeons!

Sweet peas are hardy, so as long as no frost is forecast they should be fine outside during the day.
