  • Sweetpeas in Rootrainers.

As the heading says, I have some sweetpeas growing in rootrainers. They are about 6" tall & masses of roots are coming out of the bottom of the RT. Being nosey I opened one of the books to find that the roots were concentrated to the bottom 2" of the RT. Is this normal or should I leave them longer to fill the RT with roots. Any advice grateful, thanks.

That's normal. The root-trainers make the roots go downward. There may appear to be a gap but thinking about it, there isn't is there?
You want the roots down, not at the top.

It sounds like they are nearly ready to get planted out too BM - they don't like to be checked.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Yep, I agree with Flum, that's exactly what they are supposed to do. Fear not BM!

Thank you ladies, I googled some images & the roots went from top to bottom where as mine are from bottom to 2" from bottom. I was wondering if they were overwatered as when I took some out, they just fell to bits. They are planted out against trellis and look ok.

My sweet peas are still in their root trainers and probably will be for another few weeks yet but that's mainly cos I've not got the area organised where I want them yet. Last year I planted most of them the same time I built my bean wigwams as I grew some with each of them. Was right pretty too

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

harden them off if you've had them under glass, but they don't need frost protection, they're hardy
