  • red robin (photinia) pruning

    Hi all,

What a fab site! I could spend many hours reading all the interesting tips and advice, but then I wouldn't get much gardening done!

I have quite a large red robin shrub, not sure which variety, which has really outgrown it's space. I would like to prune it but am not sure when and how is the best time/way. It has 1 thickish main stem with branches coming off this. Can it be cut back hard or will that kill it?

    Any advice greatly appreciated

The greatness comes not when things go always good for you,but the greatness comes when you are really tested, when you take, some knocks, some disappointments;because only if youv'e been in the deepest valley can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain.

      Hi Cloud

Thanks for that, it is very informative. Not sure if I will prune yet or maybe wait until March/April 09.

Ally if your Red Robin is starting to get untidy you can still give a lit prune now and Oct .

Then a severe prune back in march just before new growth .Good luck.

They are pretty tough plants, if it's desperately overgrown I'd prune it back now!
