  • Propagation !!

A thread about propagating plants (flowers, shrubs, bulbs, anything) by any method except seed

Share your successes and how you did it or ask for help with propagating your (or your neighbours ) favourite plants

Currently trying an Aloe Vera plant. It had baby plantlets at the sides when I was potting it up. Only one had it's own roots visible but there were five plantlets so they all got bunged in their own little pot and I wait to see if the other four make it.

My neighbour's rosemary tastes far better than mine and while he is happy for me to snip some off when I need it, I decided to try and propagate from a cutting last month. I put it in some water for a week and then just popped it in a pot. So far so good. I am also trying to start off ginger from a couple of chunks cut from a supermarket purchase. I soaked it in water over the weekend and planted it yesterday.

I've taken cuttings of hibiscus in peat based potting mix. One seems to have succeded. I'm also trying to grow hydrangea from cuttings. I just take a short piece of the stem, dip the base in hormone rooting compound and then in the potting mix. I have raised a lot of pelargoniums this way.

^^^^my late MIL inundated me with hydrangea cuttings, she did the same with great success. Her garden was full of them. I love them, any colour would do, they just struggle to flower here and visibly wilt in the summer.

Cuttings have been succcesful with Tyme, Goosbery and Damson in recent times. Have had success with dalias, chrysanths and fuchias too from cuttings. Michelmas daisys and chrysanths by root splitting.

Gave my Sedum (now Hylotelephium!) Spectabile Chelsea chop and struck all the trimmings in water.

My big Crassula Hummels Sunset was taken out at soil level by vine weevil. Chopped it up, left cuttings to dry for couple of weeks then struck them in gritty JI 2. Now have lots of small ones!

it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.
