I have some lovely alpine Dianthus in my garden - grown from seed about 4yrs ago. A couple have been a bit patchy this year with gaps in the spreading mound of foliage and flower. Are they short-lived and should I replace them with new ones or can I do something to re-invigorate the old plants?

I give them a trim when they've finished flowering but eventually they do get a bit ratty. You can grow more from them though. In July I try to remember to take a few cuttings. Take a bit without a flower (or nip out the flower) and put a few round the edge of a small pot of compost. You'll get at least half taking - and they're free too!Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.
