    Perennial Bedding Plants?

    Hi Folks,

    Down one side of our garden we have 15 pots that contain daf's and usually annual bedding plants.

    What I'd like to do this year is plant up with bulbs and perennial plants so I don't have to do much every year (apart from feed, mulch etc).

    Can anyone suggest suitable plants I could start from seed, the pots probably contain around 4 - 5 litres.

    Like you, I am not very good with flowers so tend to stick to my faithfull geraniums every year. Below are a few Perennial borders to give you inspiration.

      Scabious are lovely, and the bees like them too. They flower their socks off from about now to September/ October. The leaves will die down, but then pop up again in the spring.

        Dwarf tulips, crocus, bluebells, chives (can start chives from seed if you want).

        Sedum are good for pots as they cope with being a bit dry. Not sure if you can start from seed, cuttings root really easily though.

              How about echinacea/cone flower - I have some in pots. They do well in dry conditions and are pretty easy to start from seed.

                What you are talking about is a herbaceous border, and they ARE very labour intensive!

                  .The grasses idea was because I couldn't think of anything else to fit your bill. I'd stick with the annual bedding arrangement, on top of your spring bulbs. They can be plopped in to cover the dying bulb foliage

                    I think you're right. If I used geranium's and put the pots in the polly over winter would the geraniums survive?

                      Maybe, maybe not. Depends how cold really. I take cuttings in late summer/early autumn and overwinter them on the windowsills (the ones in my blowaway all died)
