    Patio climbers for west facing fence

    Hi,

    I am looking to set up a patio 'tub' for some climbers and keen on any ideas as to what has worked well. It is the key area where we sit outside, next to table, and fence is painted dark oak and about 5ft high. Toddler around so no thorns.

    I was originally going to plant some plants in ground and the train through edge of patio. However, from reading so far most seem to recommend using a tub instead. Any views on size of patio planter would be great, or recommendations on where to get.

    Really interested in good combinations. About ten ft space to fill across and would be great if there was some year round interest. Have read a lot of the official lists and people like Monty so really just looking for people's personal preferences rather than comprehensive lists. Very inexperienced so find these quite bewildering!

    If the tubs are to go round a seating area, I would definitely include sweet peas, the scent will be terrific & the toddler could pick some for the table.

      One tub, planter against fence. Seating next to this,

      Good point on sweet peas. Would like perennials as basis of planting but could leave space to add annuals such as sweet peas each year for variety?

      Where I get confused is how much tub (width and depth) I need and how many plants I should squeezing in to fill up the 5ft by 10 ft space on fence. Will tack on two or three triangle trellis to help the climbers out.

        I suppose it all depends on what you are wanting to grow, you could put a dozen sweet peas in a 12" pot but only one honeysuckle/clematis etc..........Perennial sweet peas are also available.
