    onions for flowers?

    i know you can get allium bulbs from garden centres around this time of year but what about the ordinary onions you get from the supermarket? i planted my last "long" onion i got from the supermarket about 2 - 3 weeks back and its sprouted a few leaves which are a few inches long now. will it flower in the spring/summer or will it die over winter? ...or will it even flower at all?

    It will flower next spring.

    I have a little collection of garlics that never bulbed up and they flower every year. I must go through them and see if there is anything worth eating - thanks for reminding me!

        My flowering onions have just been pulled up. The flowers are certainly impressive (big as softballs)and the bees love them (alas so did pollen beetles in their 1000s) but the stems aren't attractive to look at: thick and lumpy.
