  • New Tropical Section in the Garden

Hi everyone, I just wanted to share the fact that I'm creating a tropical area in my garden(photo below) and would welcome any advice from you all if anyone has had any experience of this. The main plants I currently have are....

    Banana, Musa Basjoo.
    Canna, two types.
    Hardy Palm
    Phormium
    Fatsia Japonica
    Blood Grass
    Ornamental Millet

    I was going to get.....

    Trachycarpus Fortunei.
Fig (I like the hand/finger like foliage).

    Kind Regards.........Rob

Looks good, Rob. My only advice is to watch that the phormium doesn't swamp the plants around it and steal the light from those behind. Same with figs because they can become thugs too.

What about a tree fern? I like them

I have loads of ideas for when you convert your greenhouse into a tropical house

I have two figs in pits made from 2' slabs and they've grown really big.

Brown Turkey probably hardiest. There's a good guide somewhere on this site.

Thanks VC. I will watch the Phormium. This bed is more of a holding bed right now I suppose. I'm planning on moving things around next year as things establish over time.

          Regards........Rob

I absolutely love tree ferns but you need to be quite flush with money to justify the cost on one plant. Not sure where the cheapest place to buy them is.

            Would love a tropical house

            Kind Regards........Rob

Not sure a tree fern would do well there in any case, they prefer shade and high humidity. Where I come from tree ferns are practically weeds, couldn't believe the price of them here!

Could try a large car boot sale. I got mine (about 4 foot tall stalk, now 5 foot) for £25 from a nursery selling off their stock for winter. I also got standard bay trees for £5 each 2 years in a row from the same seller (but different from the treefern seller) at the same time of year.
