hi all, have just moved and would really like some advice on how to tackle my new garden. It's been laid with membrame for quite a few years and is full of very mature shrubs and trees.Although it is beautiful and has a woodland feel about it, i wanted to add a bit more colour but when i dig through the cover it is chock a block with roots and almost impossible to dig! the floor is also covered with ivy etc. Apart from raised beds and pots has anyone any ideas?

what sort of roots? it might just be necessary to dig, dig, dig.......you certainly should get rid of the ivy.....

My advice would be to live with it for a year, see what grows where, take pictures through the seasons. Next year you will have a better idea of what you want to keep and what to get rid of.

Seek not to know all the answers, just to understand the questions.
