  • Muscari - Weird!

When I first got my allotment last March there were lots of blue Muscari (Grape hyacinth) scattered around the edge. As they were in the way I dug the bulbs up and planted them at home.

They are now up and are looking very thin and weak. Most are flopped down on the ground. I've compared them to the ones available in the shops and mine seem far too grassy.

These have been up since around September!

What's up? Are they not Muscari?

I'll take some snaps of I've not made myself clear.

Maybe they are just a bit confused by the weather. Did you plant them to the same depth as they were at the lottie? Sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs, but ideally bulbs should be planted 2x deeper than their height, ie if the bulb is 2cm tall, then the hole needs to be 6cm deep.

I wish I could kill mine! I've been digging them up for 10 years in the garden. Weeds!

Muscari GRRRRRR! One of my customers pays me to dig them out of her garden (both her neighbours are overrun with them) and I can't seem to get rid of them all. They multiply like mad whether planted deeply or just under the surface. I'd guess they're just suffering from the move. Once they've got settled you'll never be free from them!

You guys make me giggle - we've had the Muscari debate before, I fall firmly in the 'love em' camp.

I've planted them at a depth of around 1 to 1.5 inches.

The thing that confused me was that they were up in September!

Mine sometimes chuck their leaves up a bit early. They still flower at the same time though. I'm sure they'll be fine.

Send them round to Flum or Glutton - that should perk them up!
