  • mozaic Virus a request

A friend of mine who do's not have access to the internet asked me a question on the allotments this morning .
Somebody told her that her Dahlias had got Mozaic Virus last year and she wants to know do's the virus stay in the ground or pass on in the tubers and is it safe to grow new Dahlias in the same ground this year she is a bit worried any help would be appreciated...jacob

Jacob- I think it's imortant your friend finds out what was actually the problem. Can you print off some piccies for her to see if she recognises any of the leaf markings- and hence the problem ?
(Fellow allotmenteers have been known to be wrong!)

There are some good pictures on these pages but no clear indication of treatment!

If it really is virus, it is impossible to treat - unless you go for very fancy micropropagation so that the new plants 'outgrow' the virus. It'll stay in the tubers, I'm afraid. Shouldn't be in the soil - the virus needs living tissue to live on, as far as I remember.
