Leaves dried out on Acer

Ours can get a little crispy round the edges if the wind gets at it - I'm no expert with it though! It's pretty much left to look after itself, although we usually move the pot to a more sheltered spot in the winter. We weren't sure if it would survive this winter, but it seems to be ok.

Mine is in the most sheltered spot possible and these strong winds have still got the edges of the leaves. They are pretty sensitive to wind and compost drying out.

They really hate wind. I've got two young ones, and they aren't looking happy.

We have our potted one next to the house in an angle between the house and the fence. They really do curl and shrivel in the cold, not just the wind. I put it in the greenhouse all winter and don't bring it out till I think it will be happy (spoilt rotten, it is!) I don't think the leaves will improve this year but any new growth it puts on will be ok. Next year is another season though, so as long as they don't get cold and wind then, you'll have a lovely shrub.

I have 5 in my UK garden.

The 2 in pots on the North side of the garden are doing stonkingly well- even if they don't get watered too often

The 3 on the South side are suffering from die back where the leaves go brown- and that spreads up the branch which dies.
I asked a tree surgeon who was lopping our Eucalyptus what the problem could be - and he said too much direct sunlight/heat!( and therefore also dry soil)

No idea if this is your problem- but just be aware of it!

Mine gets the morning sun and then its in the shade from about lunchtime, its in a very sheltered spot at the back of the house under the kitchen window and the garden has a six foot fence all round. It was doing so well and has been outside since my son gave it to me for christmas. The leaves are really dried up I think I have lost it but will leave it and see what happens. I water the pots most days especially when its been hot for a few days and no rain. Raning today though.

mine survived the winter .... and looked beautiful, with it's new purple leaves .... but is now also looking a bit crispy round the edges .... wind and direct sun are probably the problem, though i am working on it

depends on the variety but some acers need lots of shade and really don't survive in strong direct sunlight. we have 3 which were all planted in a new raised bed a month or so ago. all looked great to start with but the 2 small ones that were fine for 2 years in rather small pots under the apple tree ( very shaded spot with lots of tall plants around them and protected from the wind) suddenly shrivelled up and look pretty dead. We have taken them out and stuck them back in pots under the tree. Fingers crossed they make it. The other larger red one is loving it there!

id get it in the shade and careful you dont overwater it. acers have a reserve set of leaves that will hopefully come. did you pot it up with ericacious compost - try an acid feed.

Mine also has some crispiness going on...the rest of the tree looks very healthy; I just put it down to wind or perhaps a bit of a chill earlier in the year.

I have moved it to a sunnier posistion as my OH thought it might be too cold will just have to wait and see what happens and if I loose it will replace it and not tell the kids lol
