Last year, I decided to save some hyacinth bulbs to replant. I did as Monty Don says on the interweb and all looked well. They have thrown very few flowers on a very short stem. Last year, they had long stems with lots of flowers. They were bought in a pot in full flower. What have I done wrong.

If they were in flower I wonder if they've been forced like I'm doing mine,they say to throw them away when finished flowering,probably because of poor results the following year? I'm not throwing them away though.I'l plant them out just to see what happens & feed them with sulphur of potash maybe.

I've never tried to force bulbs for a second year, probably because everybody says it doesn't work. I do what my mum always did - plant them out in the garden and let them naturalise. They flower in spring, you never again get big flowers but they are still pretty and have that perfume.Comment

Bit like rhubarb I suppose- can't cope with being forced year after year?
I planted mine out like Martin- and they tended to go like bluebells after a few years- but much more scented."Nicos, Queen of Gooooogle" and... GYO's own Miss Marple
