What is the best way to establish hollyhocks? I want loads by the top of the drive and read something about how it's best to direct sow, as the tap root really resents being disturbed, but theres a baby bunny neither the cat or Mr. llamas has managed to nab, and he just loved the sunflowers I put out there to harden off, so I'd like to ideally start them off in pots, rather than attempt fencing to keep the little *$^% out. However, a fence is worth it, if it means hollyhocks next year.

Last year Hazel at the Hill very kindly sent me some hollyhock seeds. I sowed them in 2.5" pots and then potted them up as they grew into about 7" pots and then in the autumn I planted them out - they were nice sized plants by then but this spring, wow! They have really put on some growth and are now 18"-2' across with loads of leaves and I can't wait for them to flower
They don't seem to have come to any harm not being direct sown (didn't know you were meant to). I have a few left over that spent the winter in pots and I gave to a neighbour this spring and they say they're doing well too.

I was given some black hollyhock seeds by Two Sheds (
) earlier this year, and they are just in cells at the moment. Germinated well and about an inch high.
I didnt know you should wait so long before planting them out though.Comment

You could maybe do them sooner. That was just when it was convenient to put them in for me.
